Adding GST to an invoice

Hi there Kiwi,

Welcome to the Community, I'd be happy to help with your questions about invoicing

.

In order to add GST to the invoice, you'll first need to set it up in the Sales Tax Center listed under Taxes from the left menu. The following article includes steps on how to add and edit tax rates: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1145271 .

Once set up, you'll have the option to select the tax if it applies to that particular transaction. The screenshot below will show you where it's located on the invoice.

I'll be here to assist if you have any further questions. Thanks

Adding GST to an invoice

Hi,

I saw the video, but my self-employed QuickBooks does not have a Sales tab, so I can't set up the taxes for the client I am billing.

I need to bill for services, and I need two lines on the invoice: (1) hours worked, rate, and total and (2) GST on that amount, specifying the GST number.

I have no idea how to do that.

Adding GST to an invoice

Thank you for joining the thread, @Loyda.

I'm here to share some information on how you can add sales tax in your invoices.

Currently, the ability to set up and automatically calculate Sales tax in QuickBooks Self-Employed is not yet available. What you can do is to add a line item for sales tax and enter the amount of the sales tax manually.

Here's how:

  1. Click Invoices from the menu tab.
  2. Go to Create Invoice.
  3. Enter the necessary information in the invoice.
  4. Click Add work.
  5. Type in Sales Tax in the Description field.
  6. Use Flat rate.
  7. Enter the amount.
  8. Click Add to invoice.

If you're looking to managing sales tax in invoices, we recommend QuickBooks Online. To further check which QuickBooks versions best suit your business, please click this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/online-compare/

On the other hand, our Product Developers are planning on adding more tools and features to this program in the months ahead, so be sure to keep an eye on our blog for announcements: https://intuit.me/2L2zqTv.

Adding GST to an invoice

Hello,

I've just started using QuickBooks Online.  Our restaurant has it's own Point of Sales system that tracks the sales, payment types, and calculates the GST payable.  To enter these values into QuickBooks, I've been following a guide to set up a reoccurring Sales Receipt.  The only issue that I am running into is that QuickBooks automatically calculates a slightly different value of GST (off by $5 for the week).

How do I best adjust this figure to match the POS (franchise restaurant, so I can't audit or edit the POS, but I do want to make my files match it completely for accuracy)?  I tried making a product to manually enter GST instead of having the sales items trigger it,  but it won't let me set up a product and direct it to the GST Payable account.

Thank you for your guidance,

Adding GST to an invoice

Thanks for trying QuickBooks Online, Bookeeping101.

QuickBooks will calculate sales tax based on these three categories:

  • The status of your customer's tax exempt.
  • Where you sell and where you ship.
  • The service or product's tax category.

You have two ways to adjust the sales tax. First option, you can enter a Sales Tax Adjustment. I've got the steps on how to do it:

  1. From the Taxes tab, select Sales Tax.
  2. Click the Record Tax Payment button.
  3. Fill out the required details.
  4. Tick the Make Adjustment box.
  5. Enter the adjustment amount and reason.
  6. Select an expense account of the adjustment.
  7. Click Record Tax Payment.

If you're using Automated Sales Tax, you can check this article for the detailed steps to enter sales tax adjustment: Automated Sales Tax.

Second option, you can continue the workaround you've used. Which is to manually enter GST in the item. Let's make sure that we've selected the Sales Tax Payable account in the Income account field.

You can check this article to know more how QuickBooks calculate sales tax: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.
