To complete a reconciliation of a bank account, I might have to add vs match a payment since there was a temporary mixup in what invoices had been paid.
My question is how to later match a payment to a client/invoice that has already been added to the check register which will then allow the reconciliation process to be completed. I know how to find the potential matches from the "For Review" section (edit then "find matches" but it doesn't seem to be that easy when a transaction has been added to the check register.
One possibility is to add the transaction to the register, complete the reconciliation, and then "Undo" the add (if that is possible), and then match what would be now reconciled payment.
All thoughts would be appreciated. TGH .
Hi @TerryGH ,
Welcome and thank you for reaching out to the Community.
We can check the transaction history in the Merchant Services Center to identify what invoice payment you'll include when creating Bank Deposit in QuickBooks Online (QBO) for matching.
Here's how:
From there, you can just base the matching of payment from the customer's name in the Merchant.

Thanks for the quick reply, and the owner was able to track the payment to the client but the invoices# in the client's paper trail do NOT match any of the seven or so open invoices so it will take time for the staff to work thru everything and determine how the payment amount should be applied>
So Option 1 is to wait until it is known and hold up the recon process - not ideal in any way.
Option 2 - is to add the payment to the register as mentioned originally, and later when the facts are clear -- match the deposit in the register to the correct invoices.
Or Option 3; the same as Option 2 but undo the ADD of the payment and then from the For Review screen edit the payment and "find match" and complete the match process.
So the question is will either Option 2 or 3 work in QBO, and if Option 2 is viable, how to match a payment in the register to the invoice, e.g., is there a "find match" equivalent in the registry or only in the For Review tab?
Hope this clarified my question and thanks in advance .... TGH
Hey TerryGH,
Thank you for sharing these options! However, ultimately the decision is up to you. We usually suggest waiting until you have all the information needed to match transactions and from there follow the instructions my colleague shared.
Do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions. My team and I will be here to assist you further. I hope you have a good day!
