Multiple companies, one card reader

I use Quickbooks online to manage several different companies, each with their own banking account, etc.
I have a "QuickBooks Chip and Magstripe Card Reader"  (The second one on this page: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/card-readers/qb21-qb31-bluetooth-card... )

I use that reader on one of the companies.  The other companies have non QB mercnant services, requiring other apps to collect payments.  I am considering switching the other companies to QB payments.  BUT, I have been told that I would need a separate, dedicated, card reader for each company.

 

Is that true???  Or can I use one card reader that is tied to the cell phone app, and switch companies as required? 

Hope to hear from someone with actual experience one way or the other.   Thanks

Using one card reader for multiple companies or switching from one company to another is currently unavailable. As a workaround, you'll need to order another card reader and use it for your other company files.

 

I understand that using one card reader and connecting it to multiple companies can save you from buying another one. For now, I suggest submitting feedback directly to our product engineers. They may look into this suggestion further and consider adding this option in QuickBooks. To submit feedback, you can go to the Gear icon and select Feedback. Then, enter your suggestion and click Submit Feedback.

Perhaps you could share how that can be? I didn't set up the particular reader that I have.  But nowhere in the instructions or setup do I find anything about connecting a card reader to a specific account.  So how is it possible that they can't switch? 

 

Can you tell me where to find the instructions for connecting a card reader to a specific bank account, merchant ID?
