How can I record a returned expense? Every time I try to enter in a return the system automatically converts my positive number to a negative.

I don't want to use the income option because I want to be able to see the net total under each expense category (i.e. "Other business expense".

You're right, Marial. QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) will automatically make your number negative when you use an expense category.

The reason this happens is that QBSE is designed to deduct expenses from your income. When you're recording a refund, you're essentially doing the opposite.

To ensure we properly handle returned expenses, especially with tax implications, it's always a good idea to consult with your accountant or tax advisor. They can provide guidance to make sure your financial reports and tax filings are accurate.
