How to track time

I recently moved from QB Desktop to QB Online. I am the owner of the business and the only employee. I have the Simple Start Plan, and I can not find where to record my time in order to prepare an invoice and bill a customer. As I dig into QB support, it appears I am not able to do this with the Simple Start Plan, and will have to upgrade to the Essentials plan. Is this correct?

If this is true, I am pretty upset. I will be dissolving my business in 4 months, and moved to QB online because it was significantly cheaper. I made it clear to the sales person I spoke to that I would still need to do everything i was able to do in Desktop, and was assured that would be possible. If I need to upgrade to Essentials, I will be looking at the same price as what I had for Desktop!

If I am missing something, please let me know. Thank you.

How to track time

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns with us, Paula. I deeply understand how frustrating it can be to move platforms and discover a missing crucial feature, especially after being assured of a smooth transition.

Yes, upgrading to the Essentials plan can be necessary since you were looking to preserve the functionalities you had on QB Desktop.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), the time tracking feature is available starting from the Essentials plan and above. The reason behind this is that these higher-tier plans are designed to cater to businesses with more complex needs, such as managing bills, tracking time, and handling multiple users.

On the other hand, the Simple Start plan is configured for businesses that require basic features, which do not include time tracking.

To see which subscription level fits perfectly for you, you can check out our available pricing plans.

In case you're now ready to upgrade to higher plans, here's how:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online as a primary or company admin.
  2. On the upper right corner, look for the Gear icon.
  3. Choose Subscriptions and billing.
  4. Ensure your payment info is up to date.
  5. In the QuickBooks Online section, click Upgrade your plan.
  6. Review the available plans and then select Choose plan.
  7. Follow the on-screen steps to upgrade your plan.

Once done, you're now ready to start using the QBO platform. You should switch back to QB Desktop with a non subscription license.
