Buy nowI am having trouble with Quickbooks Desktop. When I generate an accrual balance sheet report the accounts payable amount is zero. But when I generate a cash basis balance sheet there is an accounts payable balance. Is there any way to completely clear out the accounts payable accounts on both the accrual side and cash basis side? There are existing credits in the vendor center and I believe the solution involves setting up “dummy bills” and “dummy payments”. I have tried just booking a general journal entry to reduce the accounts payable balance to zero but it only has an affect on the accrual balance sheet … not the cash basis. Is there a way to make the accounts payable balance on both the cash basis and accrual basis zero ?

Not without creating bogus entries in your books. A/P should be on your books when on accrual basis not on cash basis. Double-entry accounting requires two entries (a debit and a credit) for every transaction. So, if you attempt to remove A/P you will have to create a corresponding entry for the same amount to another account.
Yes. That makes perfect sense. I have tried making general journal entries debiting AP and crediting a Dummy equity account and for some reason that journal entry will have the following affect:
before the entry
cash basis AP balance: $15,200
accrual basis AP balance: $0.00
after the entry
cash basis AP balance: $0.00
accrual basis AP balance: ($15,200
I simply cannot get both AP balances to zero by making general journal entries

That's a good thing and how it should work. It's difficult to imagine why you would want to do this if not for questionable reasons.
