Are there sample charts of accounts available for an individual using QB to keep personal financial records? the one provided has no asset or liability accounts

Hey there, andy81.

I'm happy to help you out this afternoon. If you use the QuickBooks Test drive tool, you can create a test account and mess around with it however you want, without worrying about screwing up your actual account. This includes creating a sample chart of accounts.

If you have any other questions, feel free to post here anytime.

Are there sample charts of accounts available for an individual using QB to keep personal financial records? the one provided has no asset or liability accounts

This may be a useful idea and I will give it a try.  But what I was looking for was the availability of a canned chart of accounts that fits a sole proprietorship situation with commonly needed accounts already set up that can be used, modified or deleted, etc.

This suggestion may be useful but what I was looking for was a canned set of accounts that could be downloaded and then modified.  What is present is very limited.

Hello there, andy81.

You can get a sample Chart of Account within QuickBooks Online. Once you download the file you can edit it according to the data you want to import in the program. Here's how to get it:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner and select Import Data.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Click the Download a sample file hyperlink.
  4. Open the file in Excel and edit the details.
  5. Save the new file.

Here's a link for reference in importing your Chart of Accounts: Move your chart of accounts to QuickBooks Online.

Feel free to get back to us if you need anything else. Have a great day!

Respectfully, you are not understanding the question. The questioner is asking if there is a **pre-built** template for home finance. Let me explain: Quickbook provides this link of importable chart of account templates for certain businesses, like a "barbershop." List of Chart of Accounts templates for QuickBooks Online companies. What's nice about these is that someone (at your company) took the time to consider the most important accounts for certain types of industries. There are different expense categories for a "landscaper" and a "hair salon," for example. And these different templates account for those industry differences. The question being asked is: do you provide a pre-made template for those of us using QB online for **personal finances** rather than, say, a barbershop. Such a template might include an expense category for "Education: Kids Tuition," "Entertainment: Netflix," "Food: Groceries," "Essential Expenses: Espresso."

Much obliged.

This list of example chart of accounts is awesome!  Thanks for sharing. It's ridiculous how long I had to search to find decent template COA's for basic industries.

Your comment regarding "This list of example chart of accounts is awesome".

I don't see where someone posted a link to download the COA for personal finances?

Let me point out some details with the link to download your Chart of Accounts (COA), markorceo.

If you're referring to the steps provided by my colleague @JamesDuanT, you'll only have to click the Download a sample file hyperlink to get a sample COA file. I've added a screenshot for your reference:

After clicking the hyperlink, this downloads a sample file wherein you can open for your guide:

If you're trying to download your transactions from COA, this is unavailable at the moment. As an alternative, you can export them in an Excel file by following the steps below:

  1. Go the to Accounting menu, then select the account that you want.
  2. Click View register.
  3. Click the Export icon.

Moreover, QuickBooks provides dozens of reports that show the different aspects of your business. I've added this article for more information: Run Reports In QuickBooks Online.

Hi there, @WIT.

Let me share some scenarios about creating a pre-made template for personal finances in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

QuickBooks doesn't have a pre-made template. However, you can download a chart of accounts sample file. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Click the Gear icon, then select Import data.
  3. Select the Chart of accounts.
  4. In the Import accounts window, click the Download a sample file link.

Then, use the sample file as your reference to create your own template and import it to your QBO account. To do so, go back to this Import data menu and import your created chart of accounts.

Just in case you want to learn about the usage limits, like accounts, you can check out this article for more information: Learn about usage limits in QuickBooks Online.
