Beginning Balance is off

Hello everyone.  I had to recently delete a transaction from January 2022 because it was posted to the incorrect account for sales tax, so I went ahead and created a new transaction for the same exact amount, to the correct account.  However, of course January was already reconciled when I did this.  So now when I go to reconcile my account, it gives me the error "beginning balance is off by $1478.35" and won't let me reconcile.  How would I go about fixing this issue?

Pull out LAST Months Statement or whatever the last month you did Reconcile.  Start the Reconciliation process and put in the DATE and BALANCE from that Statement.  Ignore any items that are/were truly outstanding.

The Unreconciled Balance should match the one item you changed from back in January, assuming you didn't change the amount.  Check off that one item and you should again have a $0 Balance (e.g. you're Reconciled again).

If you changed the Amount, then see if you made an Adjustment Entry or some other entry so that January Reconciled the first time around.

Also, for the future...   Did you need to Delete the Transaction?  Could you not have gone in and just changed the associated Tax Acct to the correct one?  I'm assuming the Payee was correct and the Amount was correct, so you may not have had to Delete the Acct, just change it.

Thank you for that information, I appreciate it! Prior to seeing this, I went into my bank register and found the new/corrected transaction (with the same amount as the deleted one), and I manually marked it as "R" instead of "C", and then that seemed to clear up the error and everything is now reconciled.  Not sure if that is the correct way, but will that cause any unforseen issues?

As long as the Balance is correct when you start the next Reconciliation you should be fine.

If not, un-mark that one transaction and just go back to the prior month and Reconcile again with that Closing Balance.  Once you get that $0 balance in the Reconciliation, all should be good.
