Yes, you can always get a report that will show the money received for a specific month and the total amount of the invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Let me walk you through on how to get that report:
2. Set the correct date range under the Report period.
3. Click the small Gear icon, then put a check-mark in the box what columns do you want to see in the report.
4. Select Save customization if you want to save that columns.
5. Hit Run report.

Does this show the actual payments rather than the invoiced items. So each month this shows exactly what has been paid into the business accounts?

The Transaction List by Customer will show all customer invoices and payments.
I suggest running the Invoices and Received Payments report. This way, you'll be able to see the payment associated with the invoice. I'll show you how:
