Can you re-delete accounts that have been restored to the chart of accounts? I restored some and want to re-delete them (don't want them to appear) - nothing is working.

Hi there, @drmichaelthrashe.

It's nice to have you here in the Community. I'm here to help delete accounts in the chart of accounts successfully.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) lets you delete accounts that are no longer in use and you can restore deleted accounts anytime. Deleting accounts doesn't erase their transactions, so the reports won't change except for listing the accounts as "Deleted".

To delete an account:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts under Your Company.
  3. Find the account you wish to delete.
  4. Click the drop-down arrow under Action.
  5. Select Delete.
  6. Click Yes, for confirmation.

To restore a deleted account:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts under Your Company.
  3. Above the Action column, select the small Gear icon, then check Include inactive.
  4. Find the account you want to make active again.
  5. Select Make active.

However, there are default and special accounts in the Chart of Accounts that can't be deleted. The following accounts are created automatically and you can't delete them or use them of any other purpose:

  • Undeposited Funds
  • Opening Balance Equity
  • Retained Earnings
  • Inventory/Stock Assets and Cost of Good Sold/Cost of Sales
  • Reconcile/Reconciliation Discrepancies
  • Unapplied Cash Payment Income
  • (Sales tax agency name, such as GST/VAT) Payable
