Hi all!
I am looking for the best way to deal with this unit of measure situation we have. We are a materials converter. We buy raw material and make orings, gaskets, and seals. We recently switched to a different supplier and the unit of measure they use for their material is SQFT (material is 36" wide) instead of linear FT. We've had the linear FT supplier for years and all of our BoM/assemblies are based on the linear FT measurement/price. I'm wondering what the best way to buy the material in using the new SQFT U/M. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Hello there, @jroneill.
In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), we have to create a new U/M item and set it up as a square foot. However, you would still have to update the historical transactions manually since we can't do it automatically.
Here's how:
Once done, you can now create an item with the correct U/M. Also, in the Sales Price field, you may enter a price that reflects the cost of the material in linear feet based on the conversion rate from square feet.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be right here to help you further with your item list. Have a good one.
I have some questions about this answer.
Why am I dividing by 3.6 again?
Am I supposed to create a whole new item?
Thanks for getting back, @jroneill.
May I ask why you're dividing 3.6 again? Are you manually converting the amount? Any additional information will help me provide an accurate explanation and solution.
Yes, if you haven't created an item in QBDT yet, you should make a whole new one. But if you've already made it, all you have to do is modify it and change the unit measure. For complete steps, check out this article under Change a unit of measure assignment in Single U/M per item mode section: Use single and multiple units of measure for items.
I want to ensure this is taken care off right away. I'll be waiting for your reply. Keep safe.
