Child Support Deduction

I have one employee that has two completely separate child support deductions coming from his paycheck.

In order to keep them separate, we created two Child Support Liability Accounts with their respective account numbers to make them easier to track.

One of the accounts had been correctly deducting the amount from the paycheck and placing it in the Child Support Account with the account number listed until three weeks ago. Now all of a sudden, it's showing up in a different Liability account. I've re-balanced each account with a journal entry, but I need to keep this from happening in the future to avoid confusion.

Child Support Deduction

Hello @1231 4603 0915 044,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. I can help you resolve the issue about the Child Support deduction item in QuickBooks Online.

It usually happens when there are changes to the default Liability accounts. I recommend you review your Accounting preferences and ensure the correct one is selected for Child Support.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Payroll Settings under Your Company.
  3. Select Accounting under Preferences
  4. Go to Other Liability & Asset Accounts, then choose the correct liability account for Child Support.
  5. Hit OK.

For more information about the required fields when entering a garnishment type deduction item, I recommend the following article: Setting up a wage garnishment.

Leave a comment below if you need more help with the deduction items in the Payroll section. The Community and I will be around to help you.
