Creating a Trial Balance Report with Opening Balance, Debits, Credits, and Ending Balance

Hello QB Community,

My organization is currently using QuickBooks Online and the Trial Balance report offered is not what we're looking for. I've seen that other users have previously posted and asked about a Trial Balance that includes the Opening Balance, the debits, the credits, and the Ending Balance, but there hasn't been an accurate solution. I'm specifically looking for a way to see the Trial Balance for a specific time period so I can see the debits and credits for any period I select, as well as the beginning and ending balances.

Currently, QuickBooks Online provides more of a balance sheet to date when I run the Trial Balance report, but I only want to see the Trial Balance for a specific time. Moreover, the when I do change the time frame of the reporting, none of the data changes, even though I'm fully aware of transactions occurring during different periods. If anyone is aware of a solution (or knows of other avenues to contact QuickBooks support regarding this issue) I would like to know. Or, if anyone has been able to customize a different report to product an actual, real Trial Balance report, I'd like to know that as well.

Thank you!

Creating a Trial Balance Report with Opening Balance, Debits, Credits, and Ending Balance

I understand how important it is to have a report that includes the opening balance, debits, credits, and ending balance all in one view into the Trial Balance report, Sarah.

QuickBooks Online doesn't have the option to generate a single report combining all of this information directly. Although this feature isn’t available, here’s a workaround that may help:

  • Run and export the Trial Balance report with credit and debit as of the specific end date of your reporting period to Excel.
  • Generate the Reconciliation report to see activity summaries and ending balances for accounts you've reconciled during the period.
  • Add the beginning balances for your accounts manually into your Excel file.
  • Combine all the credits, debits, beginning, and ending balances into one complete Excel.

In the meantime, I encourage you to submit your feedback directly to our team regarding this feature. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Click the Gear icon in QuickBooks Online.
  2. Under Profile, Select Feedback.
  3. Describe your feature request for a Trial Balance that includes both the opening balance and ending balance for a specific time period.

Try running a Balance Sheet Detail report.  Click on 'Switch to classic view' and adjust the dates.  For some reason, I can't get modern view to organize by Transaction Date.  That should give you a beginning balance, each debit and credit entry for the period, and the ending balance is the balance on the last line for each GL account.  The "Total" is the net change in each account.  It may not be exactly what you're looking for but maybe it will suffice.

@Rainflurry Thanks! I think so far this is the solution closest to what I'm searching for.

Users have been requesting this feature since at least 2021.  There are other forum threads with this very same request from 4 years ago!   Instead of changing the menu and adding more AI that just makes things worse, how about making a product that accountants can actually use.  OR give us Desktop back.
