Credit card beginning balances

I am trying to figure out a credit card beginning balance. This company has never reconciled or entered anything correctly. I have a real mess. I am using the starting date of 12/31/18. I'm not sure what balance to begin with as the statement with closing date of 1/20/19 has some December 2018 transactions and payments on it as well as January 2019. I can't seem to get it to reconcile. I'm thinking I should not have any transactions from 2018 entered??

Credit card beginning balances

I'm here to help you reconcile your account, @cookiesbybonnie.

You may consider locating your Bank Statement dated 12/31/2018 that contains the ending balance as of the last day of 2018. This way, we can reconcile all the transactions prior to 2019. Let me guide you how.

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Reconcile.
  3. Under Account, select the credit card account.
  4. The beginning balance should match your bank's starting balance. You can refer to this link on how to fix the opening balance issue.
  5. Under Ending Balance, enter the ending balance from the bank statement.
  6. Under Ending Date, enter 12/31/2018.
  7. Then, select Start reconciling.

Select every transaction in the reconciliation window which has a transaction date before 2019. Also, be mindful that some transactions recorded in 2018 might have cleared in your bank only in 2019. Make sure that they're not selected. Instead, you'll be reconciling them in the January 2019 bank statement at a later time.

After selecting every appropriate transaction, the difference should be zero. Then, you're good to go. Just click Finish now. If it is not, you can refer to this link on how to fix the discrepancy: Fix issues when you're reconciling accounts.

I'd still recommend consulting your accountant to ensure the accuracy of your financial reports.

Once done, you can view, print, or export your reconciliation report.

Please let me know if you need further assistance. I'm always here to help. Have a good one.
