What does checking the box do vs. unchecking it?

Hi there, @KenSmith.
Thank you for visiting us today. I can share the difference between checking and unchecking the "Except zero amount" box on the reports.
You have a lot of options in customizing QuickBooks Online (QBO) reports. One of which is the "Except zero amount" box.
Checking this box will leave the field blank if it has no corresponding information. However, if you uncheck it, the report will automatically zero out the fields.
Please see this sample report below.
That should keep you going today, @KenSmith. Let me know if you have additional questions about customizing reports. I'm still here to help you more. Have a good one!

I am a 'newbie' to QBO. Apologies if I am just missing something... but I do not see the "Except zero amount" box referenced in this thread. Where can I find this function. I would like to display 'zeros' rather than 'blanks'. Can I find it elsewhere? Many thanks! Mike
I can see from your screenshot that you're running the Budget vs. Actuals report, @MikeInMpls.
At this time, the Except zero amount option isn't available in the Budget vs. Actuals report. You can consider utilizing the Show non-zero or active only option to remove all the zero amount.
Here's how:
However, if you're running financial reports, like Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, and Trial Balance, you can find the option from the Customize button. Let me show you how.
Here's an article you can read for more details: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.
