Edit account type in Chart of Accounts

Due to an error, I need to change the account type on a Parent Account from Equity to Other Income. It has to do with unrestricted donations.  Anyway, I get a message that says I can't change it b/c it has sub accounts.  But if I try to change the sub accounts, I get the message that it has to be same account type as the parent.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,

Edit account type in Chart of Accounts

I'm glad to help you change the account type of the parent account, mclayton.

You can simply unlink the sub-account from the parent one and change each account type. Once done, link again the sub-account to the parent account.

Let me guide you through the steps on how to accomplish this task.

  1. Go to Lists, then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Highlight the sub-account, right-click your mouse, and select Edit Account.
  3. Uncheck the Sub-account of box.
  4. Click Save & Close.

After that, open each account and update the account type. Then, open again the sub-account and mark the Sub-account of box to link it to the parent one.

Aside from changing the account type, QBDT lets you add and delete accounts. You can browse this link for additional information: Learn how to add, edit, or delete accounts from your chart of accounts.

I'm also adding this spreadsheet to learn what accounts are automatically created when you select an industry type for your QuickBooks account.

From the downloaded Excel sheet, choose your industry from the Industry dropdown menu. Then, select your business type.

Let me know if  you need anything else with editing the account type on the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks. I'm always around here in the Community Forum to help you.
