help with statement writer

Hi there, @Victoria19.

Thanks for providing the specific error message you're getting with QuickBooks Statement Writer (QSW). I'm here to help you fix it, so you can get back to business.

There are a few steps you need to follow to get past this specific error. I suggest you start the troubleshooting by creating a new report in QSW.

If the report opens, your existing file might be damaged. To resolve it, you can just recreate the report.

However, in case the report doesn't open, follow some solutions below.

First, make sure to download QuickBooks latest release to improve the program's functionality and fix known issues.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Click the Update Now tab.
  4. Check the box for Reset Update.
  5. Click the Get Updates button.
  6. Click OK when prompt to continue.
  7. Click OK when prompted to accept the option to install the new release.
  8. Close the Update QuickBooks window.
  9. Restart QuickBooks.

For more information, just refer to this article about updating QuickBooks to the latest release: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1769196.

Also, download the latest version of QSW:

  1. Open QuickBooks Statement Writer.
  2. Go to Help Center.
  3. Then, click Update.

If the issue persists, please follow solution 3-9 detailed in this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Reports-and-accounting/Fix-problems-with-Statement-Writer/m-....

This information should help you rid the error message when using the QSW. Let me know how things go and if you have other questions about QuickBooks. I'll be happy to answer. Have a great week ahead!

I have already spent about two hours with tech support yesterday and they didn't get me as far as I got on my own.

Thank you,

Hello there, @Victoria19.

I understand it can get frustrating to have your issues at repeated occurrence. With the error prompt you’ve receive, let’s isolate the cause of the error whether it is the QSW installation or the QSW file itself.

  • If the report does not open, follow troubleshooting steps below:
  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
  2. Download the latest version of QSW.
    1. Open QuickBooks Statement Writer.
    2. Select Help Center.
    3. Click Update.
  3. Update your Windows settings.
    1. Change the regional settings in Windows.
    2. Change user settings (for Windows 7 only):
      1. Enable User Account Control (UAC).
      2. Make sure you are not running QuickBooks or Excel as an Administrator.
        1. Right-click the version of QuickBooks and/or Excel you are using.
        2. Choose  Properties.
        3. Go to the Compatibility tab.
        4. Ensure no boxes are checked.
  4. Make sure Excel is compatible.
  5. Change the way you access the .QSM file
    • If you cannot open your QSW data file (.QSM) over a network, save the file locally.
    • If you are unsure whether the problem is with your QSW file or not, on the same computer, access the QSW file while using a different company file (.QBW). If the file opens, try some basic data damage troubleshooting on your company file.
  6. Refresh QSW’s access permission

    1. Go to the Edit menu.
    2. Select Preferences.
    3. Choose Integrated Applications.
    4. Click Company Preferences tab.
    5. Select QuickBooks Statement Writer.
    6. Choose Remove.
    7. Close then relaunch your QuickBooks Desktop.
    8. Open the Statement Writer.
  7. Run the QuickBooks Statement Writer Diagnostics

    1. Go to the Statement Writer Welcome Page.
    2. Choose Preferences & Formats.
    3. Select Run Diagnostics Now.
    4. Follow the wizard to diagnose and fix any problems listed.
  8. Review the .log file

    1. Go to the location of the file: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Statement Writer.
Note: You may need to display hidden files and folders if the folder is not appearing.
    2. Open the isw_YYYY.log (where “YYYY” is the year, such as isw_2018.log). This file shows user activity and errors that have occurred.
    3. Look at the very bottom of the .log file to determine what is causing the error, then refer to our Learn and Support site to get detailed steps on how to resolve it.
  9. Edit the QBDSK.INI file
    1. Go to the location of the file C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBDSK.INI.
    2. Right-click the QBDSK.INI file, choose Open with then select Notepad.
    3. Add the following:

      [Log]

      Level=verbose

      UnlimitedSize=Y

      [Parser]

      DumpRequestData=Y

      SdkAccelerator=N

    4. Save the changes by going to File, then Save in Notepad.
    5. Restart QuickBooks.
    6. Note: This step turns on logging and may affect performance the longer it is enabled.

  • If the report opens, your existing file is damaged. You can just recreate the report.

If the error persists, I’d I’d recommend reaching out to Technical Support Team. A specialist will be able to look up your account securely and further assist you via remote access.

  1. Go to: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Choose your QuickBooks Product.
