How do I add a line item into the new budget?

Greetings, @Smak1.

 

All the lines showing on the budget page will depends on your Chart of Account (COA). You can add a line in your budget by adding an account to the COA.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Accountant menu, then choose Chart of Accounts or Ctrl +A
  2. Click the Account drop-down arrow, then select New.
  3. Pick an Account types and hit Continue.

 

      4. Complete the needed information, then press Save and close

 

 

After that, let's go to the Budget page to check if the line is successfully added. You can go to the Company menu, then hover over Planning & Budgeting and select Set Up Budgets

Hello there, JDpenelope.

 

You can go back to the  budget you've created to add a budgeted amount. This way, you'll be able to edit the amounts indicated in your accounts.

  1. Go to the Company menu.
  2. Select Planning & Budgeting, then choose Set Up Budgets.
  3. Choose the budget you've created by clicking the Budget drop-down arrow.
  4. Click the field to enter the budget amount.

You need to click the Save button to implement the update, then select OK once done. I've attached screenshot below for your reference.

I've added a new line item in my Charter of Accounts but it isn't showing up in my budget.  How do I get the new line item to show up in the budget?

To add a new account to your budget report, you’ll need to recreate the report to add a new one.

 

However, if you’re referring to creating a new budget and the account doesn’t show in the budget screen. I recommend closing and reopening your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software for the changes to take effect.

 

If the issue persists, I suggest running the Verify Rebuild tool to isolate this issue. This tool scans your company file for errors and fixes them right away. Let me guide you how:

 

To Verify:

 

Go to the Window menu and select Close All.

Then, go to the File menu.

Select Utilities.

Click Verify Data.

 

To Rebuild:

 

Go to the File menu.

Select Utilities.

Click Rebuild Data.

Hi Jason,

Thank you for your answer.  I was creating a new budget ant the account didn't show in the budget screen.  Your recommendation to close and then re-open QuickBooks did the trick!

Adding accounts as new line items when creating a budget in QuickBooks Desktop is similar to QuickBooks Online. Once you create other accounts (income, other income, expenses, and other expenses), they will automatically be added as a new line item in the Budget screen.

 

To add a new account in your chart of accounts, follow these steps:

 

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click New to create a new account.
  3. In the Account window, choose the Account Type ▼ drop-down list. Then, select an account type.
  4. In the Detail Type ▼ drop-down menu, choose the detail type that best fits the transactions you want to track. 
  5. Give your new account a name and add a description.
  6. If this is a subaccount of an existing account, click Is sub-account and then enter the parent account. 
  7. Add the rest of the info and click Save and Close when you're done.

Doesn't seem to solve my issue in Quickbooks online. Let me ask this, can I make a budget based off line item and then make vendors sub-line items?

I recognize how relevant making a budget-based off-line item and then making vendors sub-line items in the invoices to your business is. Currently, this option is unavailable in QuickBooks Online.

 

At times, we roll out enhancements based on our customer's requests. That being said, I suggest sending a recommendation to our product developers. They'll review this idea and might consider updating it in the future.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Gear located at the top.
  2. Under Profile, click Feedback.
  3. Enter your recommendation and select Submit.

I've done all this and the new accounts I have set up this year are still not showing up in my 2022 budget. what else can I do.

How do I add a line item into the new budget?

None of that worked. Spent a lot of time on instant chat. Ultimately had to delete my QuickBooks completely and reinstall. It seems to be working now. Thank you.

Is this still the case a few years later?   I just need to add two lines and I am done.

Your budget in QBDT depends on the accounts in your Chart of Accounts. That said, you'll have to create an account to add a line item. To do that:

 

  1. Go to Accountant and click Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the Account dropdown, and select New.
  3. Choose an Account Type and click Continue.
  4. Fill out the necessary fields and select Save & Close.
