How do I add a tip when I am receiving a payment for an invoice?

I've got the steps to record your tips in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @smokinjs2022.

Please know that the Receive payment page in QBO currently does not include fields for additional amounts such as tips. This is because the feature is designed for applying payments to open invoices or statements.

However, there is a workaround. To record the tips, you can use a different workflow by creating a separate line item on the invoice for the tip amount. I'd be glad to show you how:

  1. In your QBO account, go to Sales, then Invoice.
  2. Locate the invoice where you want to record the payment along with the tips, then select Edit.
  3. Add a second line for tip in the Product/Service column, then click +Add new.
  4. Select Service.

  5. Name the service as Tip, then select Tips Income as the Income account where the tip will be put into.
  6. Click Save and close.
  7. After that, select the newly added service (Tip) and enter the Amount.
  8. Hit Save and new or Save and close.

After that, you can proceed to utilize the Receive payment feature to link the invoice to the payment.

For a comprehensive overview of how your business is performing financially, you can run and customize various reports in QBO. Here are some helpful articles:

You will have to modify the original invoice and then receive payment

Add new/product service > Tips

Select Tips and Amount

Note that Tips are generally pass through and sales tax exempt. Should increase Tips liability when received and reduced when paid.
