I am a graphic designer and I recently had a client who wanted me to design their business card but then order cards for them through Vista Print. I charged them exactly what it costs to order the cards, no extra fees. They paid me for my hour of labor to create the card and the money for the cards themselves. How do I categorize the money given to me for their physical business cards ordered from Vista Print?
Paying for the cards is an expense
the money you receive is income
on the P&L income is reduced by expense, so the only income that shows on the bottom line is your service income
Does it matter what category I mark the expense as? Right now I marked it as Advertising..an Accountant told me it should be "Cost of Goods" but I don't see that category in the list. Or does it not really matter?
You can record it as a supplies expense (or something similar). Since you do not keep an inventory, you are not required to report inventory sold as cost of goods sold.
