The account numbers are assigned in ranges based on the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and account type. To change the account number, we can go to the Account page to enter the new one in the Account No. field.

Based on the screenshot you've attached, it seems that you haven't enabled the Account number. Here's how to enable the account number feature:
After that, we can go back in editing the account. The Number field will now appear which you can already change or update.

I'm in the edit window for a fixed asset account and it doesn't show the account number but I enabled account numbers to be shown.

Since you've already enabled the use account numbers setting in QBDT, you can consider creating a dummy account to see if the account numbers will show in that particular account. If the issue persists, we'll proceed to perform troubleshooting. This way, we'll be able to isolate this issue by performing a Rebuild data herein QuickBooks Desktop. To begin, these are the steps:
If QuickBooks doesn't find any problems, select OK. You can keep using your company file. You don't have any data damage, If QuickBooks Finds an issue with your company file, select Rebuild Now.
If you're still having data issues after rebuilding your company file, you can consider doing the troubleshooting again. If the first rebuild took 2 hours, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop support team. This way, a representative can check and investigate to determine the root cause of your issue. They'll then provide you with the best possible way to fix your problem and let you proceed to use the account numbers feature here in QuickBooks Desktop.

Hi, in QB desktop, our accounts are names but we can to start using account numbers in the near future. I am looking for guidance on how to manually do this without creating a new QB account. Please advise.
