I understand the importance of being able to insert a line item between existing items on an invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @fredessa.
With the new invoice interface, the feature to insert a line item between existing items is not currently available. The hand icon that you mentioned is indeed used for dragging existing line items to rearrange them, but it does not allow for the insertion of a new line item.
While this functionality is not supported in the new experience, users with a Plus or Advanced subscription have the option to switch back to the old layout, where it is possible to insert a line item between existing items. However, for users with a Simple Start or Essentials subscription, reverting to the old interface is not an available option.
If you wish to switch back to the old experience, you can follow these steps:
It's important to note that this process is irreversible.

Thank you for the quick response. I am not happy with the change as Intuit took a valuable function and monetized it. I bill for different things, phone calls, onsite visits , and text responses. There is no place to get these to come up chronlogically. All the phone calls are together. All the texts are together on my phone and all the visits are together on my calendar. I typically start an invoice. Go through my texts and enter line items. Then I go back and insert line items for the calls. Then I go back and insert line items for my appointments. It's not practical to build an invoice as it happens because my calls from different clients run together and I would rather enter on a pc than my phone anyway. Intuit took something essential to me and removed it almost forcing me to upgrade to get something I used to have. I will try your work around and see how it goes. Thank you again for your quick and frank response.
IT WAS MARKETING AT IT'S FINEST THAT QB WOULD MAKE THIS CHANGE RIGHT HERE AT YEAR END WHEN EVERYONE IS TOO BUSY TO DEAL WITH FIGURING OUT ALTERNATIVES TO YOUR SERVICE. QB USED TO USER FRIENDLY, NOW IT'S JUST INCREDIBLY GREADY. I HAVE BEEN A USER FOR AT LEAST 23 YEARS AND THIS IS JUST GETTING TO BE RIDICULOUS.
I am having the same issue with purchase orders. Cannot insert a line can only add at the bottom. I am using plus subscription. Please help with this issue

I have the same problem and all they can say is, "Oh Well!" You have to upgrade to Plus to get this feature back. They take things away so they force you to upgrade and pay more money!!!!! I am currently looking for an Alternative to QB that will work for me. QB thinks everyone uses invoices the same way and they have made it so not user customizable. The Desk Top was the best, but they took that away as well!!!! I wish someone would make their Invoicing templates customizable so we could add columns as we see fit. I really hate QB at this point.
I am right there with you. You pay for a service, they force you to change and make it more difficult. Terrible Quickbooks!
