How do I switch a previous sub account to another parent account?

I have one credit card payment but multiple credit card users. I had them as sub-accounts under a parent account, but no longer use that parent account and need to switch the other credit card accounts to a new parent account. I keep getting a message that I can't because it's already connected to another parent account that connected to the web. I have already inactivated the parent account I no longer need.

How do I switch a previous sub account to another parent account?

Hi @vipland,

From what you stated above, the original parent credit card in your QuickBooks Online (QBO) company is still in sync.

The first thing you can do is to remove this connection.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Transactions tab.
  2. Under the Banking tab, Tap the credit card account in question. It should be highlighted in blue, then press the Edit (pencil) icon.
  3. Hit Edit account info.
  4. On the popup window that appears, tick the Disconnect this account on save box.
  5. Press Save and Close.

At this point, you can connect the new credit card account to your QBO company. You can also proceed and change the parent account of the sub-accounts you stated above, to the new credit card account.

Speaking of which, you can also refer to this article about sub-accounts: About bank or credit card subaccount setup.

Let me know in the comments below if you have other questions about online banking in QBO. I'll be here to answer them for you.

How do I switch a previous sub account to another parent account?

Thank you Ryan_M.  I did that and then went back to connect those accounts, it still would not allow me to change the parent account.  It kept giving me the same message.

"You can't change the parent of this account to Chase Southwest Visa - Parent because it or its parent is already set up for Online Banking or Web Connect."

This is the message I keep getting after I disconnected this account and re linked it.  Not sure what step I missed.  I'll keep messing with it.

Thank you Ryan_M.  I disconnected the account and tried relinked the account to the bank.  When I tried to set it to a sub-account I got the same message:

"You can't change the parent of this account o Chase Southwest Visa - Parent because it or its parent is already set up for Online Banking or Web Connect."

I'll keep messing with it.  I must've missed a step somewhere....

I'm here to share further details about connecting accounts to online banking in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @vipland. This way, you're able to manage both your parent and subaccounts accordingly.

When an account (either parent or subaccount) is connected to online banking, you're unable to edit its details. Based on your description above, you've disconnected the parent account, and then relinked the accounts that are already connected on online banking. That's why QuickBooks displayed the notification.

To resolve this, you'll have to disconnect both the new parent account and the subaccounts from online banking. You can follow the steps provided by my colleague above to complete the process (Please see the attached screenshot below for your reference). After that, change the parent of the subaccounts to the new credit card account. Once done, you can now connect to the online banking feature.

Once connected, your transactions will automatically download. All you have to do is to review and/or match them to the existing entries in QuickBooks. For the step-by-step guide, kindly refer to this article: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online. It also contains instructions about excluding personal and duplicate transactions.

Additionally, I'd also recommend reconciling your credit card account every month. This is to monitor your expenses and detect errors accordingly. To learn more about this, you can refer to this article: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online. It includes information about editing completed reconciliations.

Please don't hesitate to keep me updated on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other banking concerns or inquiries about managing your parent and subaccounts in QBO, I'm just around to help. Take care always.
