How do you delete an account from your chart of accounts as I uploaded my own chart.

I am brand new to Quick Books and uploaded my own chart of accounts however noticed that the chart of accounts they provide you is still in there as well.

While you're in the Chart of Accounts, look for the Action button.  Click on it and choose Delete.

If there are no entries in the Acct, QBs will actually Delete the Account (at least it does in the Desktop version).  But if there are transactions in the Acct you can still "Delete" the Acct because QBs then just makes the Acct "Inactive" and hides it.  (Yeah...  None of us have figured out why QBs uses the word "Delete" for all the possible actions.)

You'd use the Delete/Hide function for accounts with transactions in the future for old closed Loans, Bank Accts, etc.  The info will still be in QBs for historical records, but you can clean up the list of Accts you see with just the Active ones.

Later if you want to see the Inactive accounts in the list, you go to the  icon up at the top and check the box to Include Inactive Accts.

Thank you for your response, however, it doesn't seem to allow me to actually click on the Action button to do so.  Please advise.

I’ve got you covered, @cgranko-powerlod. I’m here to provide information about deleting an account in QuickBooks.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you may delete an account by making it inactive. The Action option in your Chart of Accounts is a display column where you can navigate through to remove your account. But it's not the main option you'll have to click to delete your account. I suggest going to the View register dropdown beneath the Action bar, and then selecting Make inactive to achieve the task.

The following instructions will showcase the process:

  1. Open your QBO account.
  2. On the left, you will find the Accounting menu.
  3. Select Chart of Accounts.
  4. Choose the account you want to delete.
  5. Select the View register drop-down under Action.
  6. Tap on Make Inactive.
  7. Hit Yes for confirmation.

You can use this reference to find out which default or special accounts can be deleted, edited, or merged in the program: Manage default and special accounts in your QBO Chart of Accounts.

Additionally, here's an article in case you need tips to customize your accounts in QuickBooks: How to organize your chart of accounts. This will allow you to quickly determine your financial health so you can make better arrangements moving forward.
