How to add department codes without using Classes?

Hello there, kdriggins.

I'm glad you've reached out to us. Let me help you and provide some options on how to add department codes in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Since you don't want to use the Class to add department codes, the other option is to set up a Location tracking to categorize data from different departments of the same company.

First, you'll need to turn on the location tracking in QBO. Here's how:

  1. Select the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Under Your Company, select Account and Settings.
  3. Click Advanced tab.
  4. On the Categories preferences, select the pencil icon and put a check mark on the box to Track locations.
  5. Select Save then Done

Once done, here's how you can add location:

  1. Select the Gear icon.
  2. Under Lists, select All lists.
  3. Choose Locations.
  4. Select New in the upper right and add the Name of the locations you want to track.
  5. Select Save

For additional reference about location tracking, you can click this article: Set up and use location tracking.

You may also reach out to our QuickBooks Online Support Team if you need further assistance with the steps.

That should do it! If you have other concerns about Location in QBO don't hesitate to leave a comment below. Wishing you and your business continued success.

Good to see you here in the Community, JessPerks.

Thanks for joining the thread and sharing that screenshot. I'm here to provide additional insight regarding the Class and Location Tracking feature.

Currently, this feature is only available in the Plus version of QuickBooks Online. If it's necessary for your business, you may want to consider upgrading your current QuickBooks Online subscription. The steps below will guide you through the process:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Account and Settings.
  2. Go to the Billing & Subscription tab.
  3. In the QuickBooks section, select Upgrade.
  4. You will be presented with options for upgrading, along with features and pricing. Select Upgrade for the product you want.
  5. If prompted, enter your payment information.
  6. Confirm the upgrade and new billing rate, then select Confirm Upgrade.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. I always have your back and am always happy to help. Wishing you all the best.

How to add department codes without using Classes?

Hi there, @akeeler.

I'm here to help share information about adding location/department in a bulk/batch.

As of now, there isn't an option/way to add location/department codes to existing transaction by batch in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

However, if you're using QuickBooks Online Accountant you have extra tools to reclassify transactions by batch.

For your reference, you may check this article: How to use the reclassify transactions tool in QuickBooks Online Accountant.

Just add a post/comment below if you have any other questions about class tracking, I'll be always here to help you. Wishing you the best!
