How to get lowest child inventory Item number on sales reports

We define the lowest level of our inventory part items as a SKU number. There can be multiple parent levels. For example we would have a category, style name and then multiple SKUs underneath for each color.

        AYO0823REDR

When defining the specific inventory part, the Item Name/Number is AYO0823REDR and the "Subitem of" is Optical:[name removed]. 

I need to be able to produce a "sales by customer detail" report with a column containing the actual Item Name/Number value as I have defined it. I need just AYO0823REDR. However, ALL sales reports that include the 'Item' column, always displays the Parent and Child levels as well. So it shows Optical:[name removed]:AYO0823REDR.

Our products are sold at the SKU level (item name/number level) and I need that on a sales report to be downloaded, for many reasons i will not go into. I just need it but I cannot find a way to do it.

In Company Preferences there is a setting for 'Reports - Show Items by" and you can select "Name only", "Description only" or both. This doesn't help. "Name only" then displays "Optical:[name removed]:AYO0823REDR" and description just shows the description and both of course shows both. I need the lowest level only.

 

Quickbooks obviously has the ability to do this because if you run an "Inventory Stock Status" by item report and include the Item column on the report, it displays exactly what I want to have in the sales report, in this case AYO0823REDR. How can i do this on a sales report?

When running sales reports in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), the system is designed to display both the parent item and its sub-items together in the Item column. Let me share some information about the item name field in QBDT with you Ptaylor1.

 

Currently, there is no direct option to specify and filter only the item name in these reports. We encourage you to share this idea with our QuickBooks development team.

 

Here's how you can send feedback:

  1. Hover over the Help menu and select the Send Feedback Online option.
  2. Choose Product Suggestion, and a pop-up window will appear.
  3. Select Reports in Product Area dropdown button.
  4. Type your feedback in the space provided.
  5. Click the Send Feedback button.

Meanwhile, as a workaround, you can utilize the item description by adding the specific item name there to have it displayed in your sales reports. This will allow you to identify item name more clearly within your reports until an update addresses this functionality.

 

Here's how to edit the item and add description:

  1. Go to Lists and select Item Lists.
  2. Select the item.
  3. Click the Item dropdown then select Edit List.
  4. Add the item name on Description.
  5. Click OK.

 

By including the Item Description field in your Sales by Customer Detail report, any item names entered in the Item Description will be displayed in the report.

Thank you for your reply. However, adding the item number to the description is not a solution. It is already a separate field when you set up an item so why is not reportable as it is?? It makes no sense, and as I mentioned it does get reported as it should in an inventory report. The reason I need it is so I can export the information on an invoice (which QB doesn't support at all) or in this case a sales report to a third party shipper. They need to identify each item by the actual item number (SKU), not a concatenated field containing irrelevant information that no one would set up in an ordering system. Products are set up and sold using a unique identifier, the SKU. That is what this item number is so why cannot it not be extracted?? I will send this as a 'product suggestion' but really it is a bug and should be fixed.
