Hi there, sramaraju.
Allow me to share some information about multistate charges.
If you don't have any filing requirements for other states, you'll have to change the primary work location state of your employees. This way, the program will recognize that you're not filing taxes for the other states. I'll show you how:
Once done, you'll need to deactivate your work location in the other states so you will no longer be charged for the multistate support fee.

I had one out of state employee who was terminated on June 28, 2021. When can I stop paying the $12 multi-state charge?
thanks.
My one out of state employee was terminated on May 28, 2021. Can i stop the multi-state charges now, or do I need to wait until year end for tax purposes?
Thanks for joining us here, florge.

I am currently being charged the multistate fee because I have employees who live in a different state, but work in my state. However, I am not required to pay payroll taxes in that other state and I do not have that state set up in my system. I currently only have 1 work location built and all of my employees are associated with that work location.
I logged a ticket and was told to change their work location. This is invalid because the work location is already correct and is in my state.
I was also told I could change the state in their home address to make it work. This would be adding incorrect information in the system and should not be the answer to my issue.
Why am I being charged for a function I don't have set up?
Please provide a correction to this issue.
Thank you
Hello, @KRKS.
Thanks for following the thread.
I recommend contacting our Payroll Support Team for this one. This way, an agent can review your account in a secure environment and investigate the charges on your account to discuss this matter further.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. Take care!
I already did that. They told me:
I was able to reached out to our back end team and was advice that for employees who has different location from their resident, there will be multi state charge.
This response makes no sense. I only have 1 work location in 1 state, and therefore should not have to pay a multistate charge.
It appears this functionality is based on the whether the employee has a different state in their personal address when it should be based on their work location. How can I correct this and not be incorrectly charged?
Dear KRKS,
Did you ever get the problem concerning multistate fees corrected? We are in 2023 and moved moved from desktop to online, and I am going through the same exact issue. I am getting very frustrated with QBS for not solving this problem with their software.

I have a client that has used QBO since March of 2020. They have one employee that lives in a neighboring state and have no withholding or filing requirement with that state. They have been charged multi state fees from the start. We have been refunded those charges occasionally and always promised it will be fixed and to date it has not. I have spent countless hours with support trying to get this fixed. Now I have two more clients in the same situation and cannot get any help with this. I am so frustrated!! We are 15 mile from the boarding state and employing someone from the neighboring state happens so often. Come on QBO get this figured out!
This is a problem that will not be resolved, after contacting customer support and explain I don’t need to withhold taxes of file taxes from another state I will still get charged due that I have an employee with address in another state. The said the only way to avoid the fee if to change the address of the employee, yes, to lie on the information of an employee, because they are unable to fix the system. But this is not a problem that existed two year ago, it just happen on the new “upgrade” they did on theirs software, years ago one just change to “do not calculate” on the payroll settings and that fixed the problem.
I’m thinking on moving a desktop due to different problems with QB, I even email the CEO Sasan Goodarzi, but the issue was not solve, I was told that the system worked as it was intended to, and that I have to pay a fee for a service that they are not providing to me and my company is not requesting. In other words, their system is stealing money from users.
This issue has not been solve yet, I even contacted Sasan Goodarzi’s (CEO) email, and they did not solve it, even suggest me to change the employees address, which I think is not the right thing to do.
I hire an employee who lives in NM and works in Texas, we only have business in Texas, and the system is set to not calculate and to not file, but still I get charged the Multistate fee.
since I contacted the CEO’s office and the person who contacted me said that the system is set to work like that, I assume they will be robbing their customers and nobody in the corporation really cares.
Did you get any success? I’m still in 2024 are dealing with this issue, no refund has been given, they even told this is the way their system works, and I assume we the customers need to allow them to steal our money just like that. Yes, also spend many hours trying to make them solve the issue without any success.
Hi All,
It sounds like QBS Online does not care about their clients' problems because I continue to be charged for the multistate services I am not using, and for a payroll company to advise me to lie on my payroll is crazy.
The amount adds up. Do you think that the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General will be willing to help us with this problem?
Hi there, @2ndincommand.
