How to show investor's ownership in company with no buy in

I have a client with a company, where there are four equal partners who all own 25%. Only two of the investors put up initial investments. How do I show the other two as 25% owners with no money invested?

At this point, you can't because they have no basis in the partnership.  Even though each partner owns 25%, only the two partners that contributed assets to the business have a basis in the partnership.  Once the business produces income, the non-contributing partners will have their distributive share of partnership income, thereby, increasing their basis in the partnership.

How to show investor's ownership in company with no buy in

I'm here to share some information about managing owner's draw in QuickBooks Online, camispear.

The system allows you track owner's draw by creating an equity account and write a check afterward.

To create an owner's draw account:

  1. Choose Lists.
  2. Select on Chart of Accounts or press CTRL + A on your keyboard.
  3. At the bottom left choose Account and click on New.
  4. Click Equity and select Continue.
  5. Enter the account name (Owner's Draw is recommended) and description.
  6. Click Save & Close.

To write a check from an owner's draw account:

  1. Go to Banking and select Write Checks.
  2. in the Write Checks window, go to the Pay to the order of section, select the owner, and enter an amount next to the $ sign.
  3. In the detail area of the check, assign the amount of the check to the equity account you created to record the owner's draws.
  4. Click Save & Close to record the check.

For more details about this process, please see this link: Set up and process an owner's draw account.

For your reference, I'm also adding here a link that provides details about paying yourself as a business owner in QuickBooks: Salary vs. owner's draw.

Let me know if there are other things I can help you. I'm always available to answer them at any time. Have a good day!
