I just converted from desktop to on-line version. I told the person that I use classes so I needed QB Essential, but now it looks like I got wrong info - I need the Plus?

Does anybody know if there is another way in the Plus Version.  I need to keep tract of multiple houses that each have repairs/income/expenses. Need to create individual reports

Thank you for posting in the Community, Connie. I can provide you with information on tracking classes in QuickBooks Online.

To begin with, please know that class tracking is only available in QuickBooks Plus and Advance. If you want to upgrade from Essentials to Plus or Advance, check out this article: Upgrade or downgrade your QuickBooks Online edition.

On the other hand, if you have a QuickBooks Plus subscription, please follow the steps below to use class tracking:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. Choose Advanced, then navigate to the Categories section to edit.
  3. Check the box for Track classes and Warn me when a transaction isn’t assigned a class.
  4. Under Assign classes, select either One for the entire transaction or One for each row in a transaction.
  5. Click Save and then Done.

Once done, you can create and manage classes in QuickBooks Online. You'll see the Class field when you create a transaction that you can use to tag a class to a transaction.

Alternatively, if you have QuickBooks Essentials and don't want to upgrade, we can use tags in QuickBooks. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings and select Tags.

  2. Select the New dropdown and then Tag group.
  3. Give the group a name.
  4. Select a color from the ▼ dropdown.
  5. When you're done, select Save.

You can also run reports by class in QuickBooks Online to see the different information you need to show in your classes: Run reports by class in QuickBooks Online.

In the future, you can save time by referring to this article on how to memorize reports in QuickBooks Online.

If you have more queries about managing your classes or subscriptions or need more help with QuickBooks Online, please reply to this thread. We're always here to make sure you're able to sort it out. Keep safe.

Consider using Tags instead of Classes.  Tags are available in Essentials.  They may work for you.  Tags are assigned at the transaction level (bill, invoice, etc.) whereas Classes can be assigned at the line item level.  Here's a good article about the differences:
