To begin with, please know that class tracking is only available in QuickBooks Plus and Advance. If you want to upgrade from Essentials to Plus or Advance, check out this article:

On the other hand, if you have a QuickBooks Plus subscription, please follow the steps below to use class tracking:
- Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
- Choose Advanced, then navigate to the Categories section to edit.
- Check the box for Track classes and Warn me when a transaction isn’t assigned a class.
- Under Assign classes, select either One for the entire transaction or One for each row in a transaction.
- Click Save and then Done.
Once done, you can
create and manage classes in QuickBooks Online. You'll see the
Class field when you create a transaction that you can use to
tag a class to a transaction.
Alternatively, if you have QuickBooks Essentials and don't want to upgrade, we can use tags in QuickBooks. Here's how:
- Go to Settings and select Tags.
- Select the New dropdown and then Tag group.
- Give the group a name.
- Select a color from the ▼ dropdown.
- When you're done, select Save.
