If I select "Personal" for an expense can I choose a category?

Thanks for coming here today, userrussell.

Yes, you can choose a category when you select Personal as your type of transaction in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu.
  2. Find a transaction on the list.
  3. Select Personal for personal.
  4. Review the category in the Category column. QuickBooks tries to categorize transactions for you.
  5. If you need to change the category, select the category link. Select a general type, and choose a more detailed category.
  6. Click Save.

In case you need to change the category from a transaction that was already made, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu.
  2. Find the transaction you want to edit.
  3. Select the icon to expand the transaction.
  4. Edit the transaction name, add notes or attach a receipt.
  5. To change the category, select the link in the Type or Category column. Then select a new category.
  6. When you're done, select Save.

If I select "Personal" for an expense can I choose a category?

Hey! I'm having trouble categorizing personal transactions.

When I press on "Personal" under "type" it automatically defaults to either "personal income" or "personal spending". When I try to edit them it doesn't even let me click on it. This is a newer account and I have a second account that I got last year and I'm able to categorize everything in the old one (ie. food, shopping, etc.) but on the new one it's always either personal income or spending.

Let me help you go over your account and have those transactions categorized, agaal.

You'll need to enable the Personal categories option in QuickBooks Self-Employed to able to change the category of your transactions.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the upper right corner and choose Manage categories.
  2. Enable the option for Personal categories.
  3. Hit Let's go.

Once done, you should be able to categorize your personal transactions.

Additionally, you can visit the following write-up regarding how Schedule C categories show up on your financial reports: Schedule C and expense categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Let me know the result of this troubleshooting in the comment below. I need to make sure you're able to categorize your personal transactions or if you have other questions in mind, please let me know. I'll make sure to get back to you as quickly as I can.

If I select "Personal" for an expense can I choose a category?

Hi, I'm using Quick Books Self-Employed and I don't have the option to enable Personal Categories.

What would that be missing?

Thanks

Hello, SamGardenDesigner.

When you encounter strange behaviors like missing options, we can perform some basic troubleshooting steps to fix them. This might be caused by a corrupted file cache stored in your browser. Let's open the webpage in an incognito or private browser. This mode will not save your browsing history and will help isolate any web issues.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Shift

If it works, go back to your default browser and clear the cache. See Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks for more information. Before doing so, make sure to take note of your saved passwords and URLs.

Otherwise, switch to a different browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. The one you are currently on may be having a temporary issue with QuickBooks, and using a new browser for the moment will allow you to get back to work.
