Investments account with Non-Current Asset account type

The QuickBooks Support article “A complete guide to account types and detail types in Quckbooks Online contains a table with the account type “non-current asset” and the option to have an Investments account with that account type. However, when I click new to create a new account in QB Online COAs, Non-Current Asset” is not an option. This appears to be a bug in QBO or an error in the documentation. Please let me know how to create this account so I can record non-current investments like stocks and bonds.

Investments account with Non-Current Asset account type

Thanks for laying out the details of your concern, @Sea_Star_CFO. Let me explain why you can't see the non-current asset as an option, and I'll walk you through creating an account to track your non-current investment entries in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First off, please note that this is not a bug in the program or an error in the documentation. The support article you shared is specific to the QBO UK version, which is why you cannot find Non-current Assets in the Account type dropdown. You may refer to these articles to learn more about account and detail types for QBO US:

In the QBO US version, you can utilize the Other Current Assets to create an investment account. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and choose Chart of accounts.
  2. Click New and enter an Account name.

  3. Select the Other Current Assets as the Account type, and then choose the Detail type from the dropdowns.

  4. You can enter Opening Balance, and fill out the starting date in the As of field.
  5. Once done, click Save

Additionally, you can visit this article if you need to generate subaccounts to help you keep your chart of accounts organized and create more detailed reports: Create subaccounts in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online. You can also make inactive if you have accounts you no longer use.
