Is there a way to see which transactions within an account don't have a customer/job assigned?

I'm looking for a way to pull a report that allows me whether a customer is assigned or it is blank for transactions within an account. Is there a way to do this in QB Desktop? If not an option in Desktop, is it an option in QB Online?

I don't see a way to do this in the Transaction Detail by Account report or the Transaction List by Customer report. I've also struck out with the Custom Transaction Detail report. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kendrick,

You're thinking along the right lines about using reports to find transactions without a customer or job assigned! It can take a bit of digging to find exactly what you need.

While there isn't one default report that highlights those specific transactions, you can uncover them by customizing some standard reports. Here's how:

QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Select Customers & Receivables.
  3. Choose Transaction Detail by Account.
  4. Click the Customize Report button at the top.
  5. Go to the Display tab.
  6. In the Columns section, check the box for Customer.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Now, click the Customize Report button again.
  9. Go to the Filters tab.
  10. Select Customer from the Filter list.
  11. In the Customer filter dropdown, select <Blank>.
  12. Click OK to run the report.

This will show you all transactions within the specified account that do not have a customer assigned.

QuickBooks Online:

QuickBooks Online offers similar customization options. You can follow a similar process using the Transaction List by Date report:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Search for and select Transaction List by Date.
  3. You should see options to Customize the report at the top of the report.
  4. In the Columns section, find Customer and check the box to add it as a column.
  5. Go to the Filter section.
  6. Choose Customer from the filter dropdown.
  7. Select Is empty to filter for blank customer entries.
  8. You can then Save the report and run it at any time.

Additionally, I recommend submitting a request to our developers for a report that contains transactions within an account that doesn't have a customer/job assigned. We value your ideas to help you work conveniently. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Help icon at the top menu.
  2. Select Send Feedback Online and then click Product Suggestion.
  3. Enter your request, then tap Send Feedback.

Monitor your suggestions through this website and stay informed about recent developments by visiting our blog.

It'll be my pleasure to help you more with your journal entries. If you need further assistance pulling up other reports, let me know. Take care.

Is there a way to see which transactions within an account don't have a customer/job assigned?

Hi JamaicaA,

I appreciate your help, but unfortunately, this doesn't solve my problem. Adding the Name to the Columns list doesn't bring in the correct information. It appears the Name item will bring in any name associated with the transaction, including vendors. For example, for the transactions associated with payments to vendors, there is a vendor name and a customer/job name associated with the transaction. This method only pulls in the vendor name.
