Is there a way to track income, costs, and profitability by billable employee?

I would like to be able to track the profitability per field employee in QBO.  I have a manpower company and need to know per employee (not as an average) what their profitability is after all costs.  If this cannot be done in QBO but can be in QB Desktop or Enterprise, please let me know that as well.

Thanks,

Is there a way to track income, costs, and profitability by billable employee?

Hi, Mike1111.

I can see how beneficial it is to your business to mark an expense as billable to an employee. However, this option is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

As a workaround, you can run the Project profitability and Time cost by employee or vendor report.

Project profitability:

  1. In the left menu, click Projects.
  2. Select the project's name.
  3. Go to the Project Reports tab.
  4. Click View beside Project profitability.
  5. Select the export icon and choose Export to Excel.

Time cost by employee or vendor:

  1. In the left menu, click Projects.
  2. Select the project's name.
  3. Go to the Project Reports tab.
  4. Click View beside Time cost by employee or vendor.
  5. Select the export icon and choose Export to Excel.

To know more about how the Project feature, see this article: Set up and create projects in QuickBooks Online.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help. I’m always around to further assist. Have a great day.

Is there a way to track income, costs, and profitability by billable employee?

I am not currently utilizing the projects section of QBO.  I have in the past but not using the time input feature as it required me to double enter hours worked for an individual to run payroll.  Is there a way to tie payroll to the projects or if entering the Time under the projects for it to go to payroll?  Also, will it add in all the employer costs for paying an employee (taxes, Ins, Work Comp, Etc)?

Thanks for your time

Is there a way to track income, costs, and profitability by billable employee?

I appreciate you getting back to us and providing additional information, Mike1111.

QuickBooks Online comes with a comprehensive Projects feature where you can easily create time activities. You'll want to make sure that the time entry of the employee is billable so it will reflect in the project.

When using the payroll feature, the hours worked from timesheets will automatically reflect in QuickBooks. Otherwise, let's make sure that the time activity is recorded on the project.

Tracking the hourly time costs on a project is also included in this article: Track income, costs, and profitability by project.

Please let us know if you need anything else. Have a great day!
