I use QB Online basic as I do not need a more robust system. However, I need to track job costs for 5-10 entries for each project. Is the a way to track job costs or project costs without having to upgrade my subscription plan?
All help is appreciated. Stanley
Hi there, Stanley.
When saying basic subscription, are you referring to QuickBooks Online Simple Start? If so, let me share some workaround to help you track job cost in the program.
In QBO Plus and Advanced subscriptions, we use the Project feature to track project’s profitability.
Since this isn't offered in lower versions, you can create sub customer account and use it for tracking projects.
For example, QBO Advanced shows the project name under a customer just like a sub-customer. You can use this as workaround to easily identify which customer is the project linked to.
Here's how to create sub-customer:
Before you create one, make sure the parent customer is already set up.
Once done, you can now use this to record your transactions as a project in QuickBooks. Simply run any customer related reports to track your project’s profitability.
You can also run several financial reports to track your sales income in the program.

Thank you for your input as it is greatly appreciated. One quick question, it the parent company the same as the new customer?
Thanks, Stanley
Thanks for adding the screenshot, @StanleySumnerllc.
I'll share some information about creating a sub-customer. In QuickBooks, you're unable to create a sub-customer using the same name as the parent customer.
As a workaround, you'll want to add a number or a special character to the sub-customer to make it unique. Here's how it looks like.
From there, you should be able to save and add the sub-customer.
Learn more about customers in the links below.
With the above recommendation, you're able to add a sub-customer and keep track of your job costs.
Please don't hesitate to reply to this thread if you have follow-up questions or concerns with customers. I'm more than happy to answer them for you. Take care and have a great day ahead.
Thank you for sharing more details, @StanleySumnerllc.
I can share some clarifications, Stanley. Ensure to create a different customer project/job to track it under the customer's name (Daniel Du Brin). The new customer is different from the parent company.
For example, if the project name is Plumbing, you'll have to create a new sub-customer for that job under Daniel's name. Please see my sample photo below:
Here's how:
You're absolutely on the right trail then and able to track job costs and run financial reports to track your sales income.
