Jobcosting and Estimates for cost and revenue

I have a customer that is a general contractor.  He does not want mark ups on each item when viewing reports, he does not want to see cost and revenue at the same amount (with no markup).  He wants to see an estimated cost per item with estimated revenue zero and then wants to see a lump sum estimated revenue by category like base house, options, etc.  Is there a way to record estimated cost with no estimated revenue?  Is it possible to record an estimate with revenue only and no cost?

I appreciate any feedback.

Jobcosting and Estimates for cost and revenue

actually I may have found a solution, in the estimate if you make the cost column zero and the total column has an amount, only the revenue prints on the estimated revenue report.  For cost, if you enter the cost amount, then the same cost as a negative amount under markup, the total column is zero and only the cost will show up on the estimates report.  Is there any reason we should not use this process?

Thank you for sharing your solution about your estimates, @Gina62. Let me share more information about the estimate report.

Yes, you can use this workaround for your estimates reports. It will not affect your book, as estimates are non-posting transactions.

Moreover, I'd like to share this informations to help you manage your estimates and reports:

Jobcosting and Estimates for cost and revenue

Another question, I need to enter a budget for an entire project (several lots/jobs included) and when I record a budget on the master customer name but the costs are on the jobs under the customer and I filtered the Estimates vs. Actuals report by name-multiple names, it does not pick up the job costs.  It appears the filter by name & using multiple names does not work with the Estimates vs. Actuals jobcost reports.  Is that correct?  Is there any workaround to get customer & jobs on one report when there's just one estimate and multiple jobs?

Thank you.

Jobcosting and Estimates for cost and revenue

Hello, @Gina62.

QuickBooks Desktop typically allows you to set budgets at the customer level, but job costs are tracked at the job or sub-customer level. When you filter the Estimates vs. Actuals report by multiple customer names, the program isn't able to reconcile the budget at the customer level with the costs at the job level, resulting incomplete data in the report. However, I can provide you with a workaround to help achieve your desired outcome. However, this involves a manual process. You'll want to consider exporting the report and manually customize the data from there. I'm here to help you how.

  1. Go to Reports and select Jobs, Time & Mileage.
  2. Choose Jobs Estimate vs. Actuals Details.
  3. From the drop-down, select the correct Customer:Job.
  4. Set the appropriate report date and filter.
  5. Click the Excel drop-down in the top menu and choose Create New Worksheet to export the report.
  6. You can go back to the main Jobs Estimate vs. Actuals Details report, then double-click the total amount of the estimated cost and actual cost to view the item estimated cost detail.
  7. Click the Excel drop-down and choose Create New Worksheet to export this part of the report.
  8. Manually cut and paste the estimate columns from both exported worksheets into a single worksheet.

To learn how QBDT populates the data in your report, please check out this article: Understand reports. We also have a guide on memorizing reports that I'm sure you'll find helpful. It has step-by-step instructions that'll walk you through saving your customized reports. This way, you don't have to go through the customization process again.

Thanks, I know about the summary report.  I was hoping to find the Est vs. Actuals-detail report for a customer with jobs/sub-customers.  I guess that is not available.

Thanks for the information.
