Hi all, I'm trying to use the management report feature in QBO Advanced. It's pretty cool and seems so promising. However, I'm struggling with changing the reporting dates for a new period.
I'm trying to put together a budget vs. actuals report package. In theory I would be able to edit one field each month - the management report period - and have the whole thing update to that period. But it just is not working.
My original reports are set to 1/1/23 to 12/31/23, because they're based on the 2023 budget. But no matter what period I select or custom dates I use for the report period in the management report, the budget data always returns the entire year.
It seems like I'm going to have to change the original reports to "This year to last month" and duplicate that in the management report. However, once I get to January 2024 and I'm trying to report on 2023, that is going to cause a problem.
I have also noticed that even if I update the dates in the original report, they don't change in the management report unless I delete the report and add it back in.
Anyone having success with this? What am I missing?

I spent some time (1+ hour!) on the phone with support yesterday doing a whole bunch of troubleshooting. It seems that if you have multiple sub-reports in a Management Report, you have to edit the period for each one.
FWIW if someone stumbles across this post in the future, I've finally figured out that the proper order of operations is:
1. Edit the reporting dates on the initial screen (where mgmt reports are listed)
2. Open the report (edit) - edit the dates again in the upper right hand corner (doesn't seem to populate over from the initial entry)
3. Go to "Reports" and edit the dates for each report. Save between each edit. Use custom dates, not the name of a period (eg. This year to last month).
If I do all of the above it seems to work reliably.
Hello there. I appreciate you providing details of your concern. I got your back to ensure you'll get the correct data for your management report.
When running the management report in QuickBooks Online (QBO), the date selected in the Report Period dropdown will be the time range of the data displayed in the report. On the Cover page section, the Report period shows the report end date. For more details, check out this article: View and edit management reports in QuickBooks Online.
To resolve this, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to determine if this is a browser-related issue. Doing this will provide us with a clean slate to prevent any issues. Below are the shortcut keys you can use:
Once signed in, attempt to edit the date of the management report again. From there, check if this will now show you the correct data. If this works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to eliminate the piled-up cache. If the same thing happens, you can use another supported browser or device.
If you have any other concerns managing your report, please don't hesitate to leave a reply below. I'll be here ready to lend a hand have a good one and stay safe.
Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it didn't work. I tried everything.
Incognito window. Cleared cache. Tried a different browser (edge instead of chrome, also cleared cache). I even tried a different computer under someone else's browser. Nothing worked. No matter what initial dates I put into the management report it returns the dates of each original sub report.
I did notice that within the management report I can edit the dates of each sub report one by one from the reports section. That is slightly easier than editing the dates of the original reports separately.

Hi, I thought I would chime in. I have tried everything you mentioned, but even I typed in exactly the same wording as the reports that come with management as QuickBooks reports it did not act the same. I copied the original management report commands from the line I wanted to edit and it worked. I now have a report that gives me the end date automatically on the report without me typing it in.
my copied line: * For the period ended {Report end date}. * Notice the brackets, no asterisks.
Please tell people to look at the reports that QBO has automatically loaded and copy and paste the lines they want filled to current date.
Example: For the period ended {Report end date}, notice the brackets.
It seems that QBO has done some work here and now the report dates are working properly. The management reports have become an invaluable tool for me to put together a block of reports each month quickly and easily, so I'm very grateful that the date issue has been resolved.
The reports are still not displaying properly. I have to go into the management report and update the time period for each report. It's easier to just print out the original custom reports and send those. The whole point is to make it automatic. If I have to go in and update them before I can send them, what's the point?
Please let me know when you have fixed the problem.
I understand the challenges you're experiencing with the reports not displaying properly in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
When generating a management report in QuickBooks Online (QBO), the data displayed in the report will correspond to the time range specified in the Report Period dropdown selection.
