Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

Modern View doesn't have amounts or a balance in the Transaction Journal when you drill down in the Trial Balance.  The most ridiculous change I have seen yet.  When I switch to Classic View all of the information is there.  Accountants need numbers.  Who had the idea to remove amounts from default reports??  Please fix this asap or you will have a not of unhappy customers.  Anyone else having this major issue??

Thanks.

Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

We can perform some troubleshooting steps to show the value for amount and balance when running the report in Modern view in QuickBooks Online (QBO), DorGee123.

We've checked our records and there's no reported case about this one. Also, we replicated this one on our end, there's an amount in the Balance and Amount columns when running the Transaction Journal in the Trial Balance report. See the screenshots for your reference:

To better isolate the issue, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to identify if this is a browser-related issue. We can access your QBO account on an incognito window.  It could be your browser's cache and cookies are corrupted causing unexpected behaviors when running the report. Refer to these shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Then, run the Trial Balance and Journal report again. Here's how:

  1. Go to Reports on the left side menu.
  2. Enter Trial Balance in the search field.
  3. Select the date in the Report period field.
  4. Click the amount in the Debit or Credit side to run the Transaction Report.

To learn more about running and managing reports, you can check out this article: Run reports in QuickBooks Online.

If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete those temporarily stored files and browsing history. The overtime data collection can create corruption, however, removing this should fix the issue. You can also use supported, up-to-date browsers to roll out the possibility of a browser-related issue.

Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

Thank you for your reply.

I am glad your test worked but mine still does not.  I have cleared my cache.  Still does not show account or balance.  One thing I noticed is that your columns in the screen shot says 10.  The default when the transaction report is opened from Trial Balance is 8.  Did you add amount and balance?  This is the only way I can get these to show.  It seems silly to have to select amount and balance every time you want to review data.  I can select amount and balance and get it to show in the report but it doesn't save.  When you are in Trial Balance you can't tell it which transaction report you want to view.  I just want the default one to actually show useable data.  Not a great accounting report without dollars.

If I select classic view it is perfect!!  Nothing wrong this this report but there seems to be with modern view.

I have read lots of people voicing their displeasure with modern view.  I know I am not the only one that would like to keep classic view.

Accountants need numbers in every report.  Please listen to the users.  Classic view is far better to look at and always had the information we needed.  Modern view would be fine if it showed the same information.  Then if we wanted to delete a column or add one we could which I believe is the point of Modern View, building in flexibility.

Accountants are busy and do not have time to play with reports every time.

Thanks,

D

Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

One other thing.  I can save the Transaction Report (new) and call it up in Custom Reports but there is no way to change the account number.  If the account number could be changed this would be actually better than having to go to Trial Balance every time.

The report Transaction Detail by Account has all of the information I want but it dumps all of the accounts and usually I just want to review one at a time in detail.  I cannot find where to weed out superfluous accounts even when I try the filter option.

Thanks,

Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

We appreciate you troubleshooting your browser to address your concern, DorGee123. I'm here to offer additional assistance to help you run reports with the appropriate details and columns.

In QuickBooks Online, the Amount and Balance columns are part of the default column in the Transaction Journal for the Trial Balance report. Since there are only eight columns in your report, can you share a screenshot of how it looks to help us sort this out?

Moreover, you can change the account number from the custom reports directly in the Chart of Accounts. Here's how:

  1. Select Transactions, then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account from the list and choose Edit from the Action dropdown.
  3. Make the necessary changes in the Account number field.
  4. Click Save.

Furthermore, you can select the accounts you want to see in the Transaction Detail by Account report through the Filter feature. This process will eliminate the account you don't want to include. Here's how:

  1. Open the Transaction Detail by Account report.
  2. Click the Filter icon at the top right part.
  3. In the first field, choose Account.
  4. In the second field, pick Equals.
  5. In the third field, select the account you want to review.

On the other hand, we value your insights regarding the new reporting experience. We want to ensure you'll have a seamless transition from the classic to the modern view. Therefore, I recommend submitting feedback directly to our product engineers. They'll gather and assess your suggestions and might consider them when working with future product updates.

Additionally, you can send your memorized report at your preferred frequency via email if necessary. For more information, please visit this material: Set schedule and email information for a memorized report in QuickBooks Online.

Keep us posted in this thread if there's anything we can help you with as you configure the different reports in QuickBooks Online. We're always here and willing to assist you in all possible ways.

Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

Thank you for the other solutions.  I will review these later.  Currently would like to get the Trx Report working.  Please see attached document where the default is 8 columns, with no amount or balance.

Thank you,

Modern View doesn't show amounts or account balances in Transaction Journal. WHY??

Hi there, @DorGee123.

I know how vital it is to navigate your reports in QuickBooks Online efficiently. If you see only eight columns by default, you need to create a customized report and access it through the Customized Reports tab for easy access.

Here's how:

  1. In the Transaction Report, click on the Customize Report button.
  2. In the Columns tab, ensure that Amount and Balance are checked.
  3. If they are not, check the boxes and click Save.
  4. Click the Save as button to save the customization.

After saving the custom report, you can access them through the customization tab. Here's how:

  1. On the left menu, go to Reports.
  2. Head to the Custom Reports tab.
  3. Find and open the custom report name you recently saved.

While accessing the customized report through the custom reports tab will not let you click go back to the summary report, I have a workaround to help you navigate your reports seamlessly. By utilizing your browser's bookmark function, you can save your report's link as a bookmark in your browser. This way, you can access them faster than the custom reports tab.

Other than that, you can also consider exporting your reports to Excel from QBO. This way, you'll be able to customize your report more advanced.

Feel free to comment if you have additional concerns about reports in QuickBooks Online. I'll always be here to assist you.
