QuickBooks Online provides a feature to tailor reports according to users' needs, which enables them to get a clearer picture of their financial data. I'd be glad to help you. 

To view a Profit and Loss (P&L) report in QuickBooks Online, follow these steps: 

1. On the left of your QuickBooks Online (QBO), click Reports.
2. Select the Profit and Loss Detail report under the Business overview section.
3. Modify the reporting period to a specific month.
4. Click Run report.

Once you've opened the Profit and Loss report, you can customize it in several ways:

1. Go to the Reports.
2. Select and open the Profit and Loss report.
3. On the upper right corner, click Customize.
4. You can change the column depends what you need.
5. On the filter, you can choose what to display in the distribution account, customer, vendor, employee, class, and products and services.
6. Hit Run Report.

Moreover, you can memorize and keep a hard copy for future use. This feature saves you time from doing the customization process again.

I did get how to customize a P&L report in terms of date or dates to be included.

But I'd also like to get a P&L report containing both last month's numbers and year-through-last month numbers side by side.

3. Choose a Compare another period to Last Month or anything you prefer.
