Payroll Reports in Excel

I am unable to run the report Summarize Payroll Data in Excel. I get the error message in Excel "We found a problem with some content in 'QB_Payroll_link_xlt'. Do you want us to recover as much as we can?" It never works out. I have updated QBooks and Windows 10, rebooted the PC, verified & rebuilt QBooks, ran the file doctor & Tool Hub, and contacted support for help. I still have no resolution. There are problems with other payroll reports that present in Excel. Is anyone else having issues? I use MS365 launched from my desktop.

Payroll Reports in Excel

Thanks for reaching out to the Community about your concern, Yogi.

The error you encounter when running the Summarize Payroll Data in Excel Feature is already reported to our engineers. Rest assured, they’re working to get the report functioning back to normal.

As a workaround, delete the QB_Payroll_Link.xlt template and download it again. For the step-by-step process, I recommend you get in touch with our Payroll Support Team.

One of our specialists will guide you on how to perform the troubleshooting steps. Contacting them ensures your account is viewed in a secure space.

Here’s how to reach them:

  1. Click on the Help icon at the top menu bar to select QuickBooks Desktop Help F1.
  2. In the Have a Question window, scroll down to choose the Contact us link.
  3. Go to the Tell us more about your question section to enter the issue or topic in the field box.
  4. Press the Search button to display the Get Phone Number or Start a Message button.

For future reference, here’s an article that contains solutions when you’re unable to export reports to Excel: Fix export to Excel issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

Also, this guide provides a list of all Excel-based payroll reports in QuickBooks. It includes instructions on how to build each one: Payroll Reports.

I appreciate your patience while we’re through this. Feel free to visit the Community if you have other QuickBooks concerns. I’ll be glad to lend a helping hand.

Yes, two and a half years ago. How long do you think they'll work on it before they fix it? Another couple of years?

I took a look at it a year and a half ago and fixed it in a couple of hours and then posted the fixed version on our site . Wasn't really that hard. See BRC Summarize Payroll Data In Excel – Fixed!

Payroll Reports in Excel

This is just bull. Payroll reports to Excel are not correct, if they run at all. They are pulling in states that do not even exist for this company file. They are pulling in employees that have never existed in this or any other company file that I have. I get different totals for gross earnings from one report to the next for the same period.

Some reports say the certification was revoked by Intuit and give instructions for allowing macros in Excel 2003 and 2007. What the heck!!! You are making the whole Payroll Module worthless to me and raising prices nonetheless. Call me disgruntled.

Any update on this issue?  The reports still give the error and the data does not populate properly.

If you've update to version 22.0 the fix from Big Red Consulting no longer works

What is the status of the fix for this error that was reported and being worked on more than 2 years ago?

Payroll Reports in Excel

Hello there, kimbuc.

The status of the investigation is In Progress

I know the importance of getting the payroll reports in Excel. If you haven't already, you may want to try these steps provided by another user in QuickBooks.

  1. From Excel, click File > Options.
  2. Choose Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
  3. Select Trusted Locations.
  4. Click Add new location.
  5. C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks version\Components\Templates\
    Description: QuickBooks 22 Templates
Checked: Subfolders of this location are also trusted

  6. Click OK twice.

If the issue persists, try the Windows Program "Repair Office" and try again.

Otherwise, you can contact our technical support to further assist you with generating the payroll report.

Your patience and understanding are much appreciated.

You presume too much.  It's been about three years since this issue started. I think everyone has pretty much lost any patience they might have once had.

Thank you so much BigRedConsulting.

I have spent hours and hours talking to support, reinstalled the program multiple times, and lost many days of work to this issue over the past 2 years.

The fix you did for 2021 was a godsend, and I was at a loss when I realized it didn't work in 2022.

Thank you so much for providing an update for 2022! I don't understand how intuit cant figure out a solution like you guys have. I really appreciate you making it publicly available too, just seeing this update for 2022 has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. I'm sure I'll be counting on you again next year because Intuit doesn't care about their product or customers.

Thanks again, you guys rock.
