I'll walk you through the steps on how you can change your customer's primary display in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @djwalters-gmail-.
We can simply go to the customer's information window and change the display name from there. Here's how:
In addition, you can run the Transaction List by Customer report in QBO. This way, you can check your transactions (income and expenses), grouped by customers in QuickBooks. Just go to Reports and search for Transaction List by Customer report.
That's it! Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to be of assistance. Wishing you and your business continued success in all that you do.
Thank you, that *does* work!
Question: When we go live (converting from QB app to QB online), we want that selection for *all* customers.
Is there a way to specify "display by customer company" as the default or "global" preference?
When you change the Display As field to the company name I can no longer find the human by searching the customer list. Is there a way around list?
Hello @CindyPelletier,
You can remove the checkmark on your customer's profile so the name can be shown when searching it. Let me show you.
On top of that, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can organize your customers' list: Add and manage customers in QuickBooks Online.
Additionally, I've got you this helpful article for guidance in preparation for the 2020 tax season: QuickBooks Online Year-end Checklist.

My client has 5,500 Customers. Imported from Sage 50. How can we do apply this - pretty obvious need - across all 5,500 within a few minutes?
Thank you for joining the thread, @Christo-FD.
I've come with a solution that can help you show the company name as a primary display instead of the customer's name.
At this time, QuickBooks doesn't have an option to change the primary name by batch. I understand that your client has 5,500 customers but you can only modify the display name one at a time.
However, I've got a workaround that you can consider. You can look for a third-party app that can help you with this. To do so, you can go to the Apps menu and search for an app.
You may also want to view the status of your sales transactions in your QuickBooks Online. You can go to the Sales menu and select All Sales.
I'm still open to your replies, @Christo-FD. If you have other concerns (account issues or product-related questions), don't hesitate to include them.
Hello,
Is there ANY update on this issue? Today SOMEHOW all of my customer names have been changed from using the Company Name to using the name of the main contact as well! I don't have 5,500 clients YET but I am working on it!
Marcel
I appreciate you for joining the thread, Marcel.
Before anything else, I would like you to know that we're here to support your goal and as your business partner in achieving your 5,500 clients. We know you can do it and achieve more than that.
Going back to your main concern about changing the primary name by batch. Currently, the option to perform this is unavailable.
As my colleague suggested, you can search for a third-party app that can help you perform this by going to the Apps menu and look an app in the search bar.
Also, I see this idea as helpful if we want to change multiple primary names in our QBO account. By just having this option, performing the steps will become a lot easier and more convenient.
Then so, I recommend you send direct feedback to our product engineers. They might add this to our future product updates.
Here's how:

Hello - has this feature been added. Would like the display name to be the company name, not the first/last name.
I understand the importance of displaying the name to be the company name, crottst88. I'll share some insights about this.
Receiving up-to-date information on this function is relevant to providing transparency for your business and customers. As of now, there is no specific timeframe as to when this feature be available in the program. While this feature isn't yet available, I'll encourage you to send feedback or product recommendations to help improve your experience using the platform.

Please feel free to comment below if you have other feature concerns. I'm always ready to help.
It's ridiculous that QuickBooks has not thought of this need for their clients. We have hundreds of customers imported from another software and also have to manually convert one at a time.
Additionally, the customer view page is designed with a scroll feature instead of pages, so an RPA would not even work.
To not even give us the option to pay for back-end programming to achieve this is an in insult.
