Can't add account to chart of accounts

Hello.

I am a new Quickbooks Online user and am trying to set up my chart of accounts. My organization has an already established chart of accounts, with account numbers and specific names. (It is in a completely different electronic system that couldn't import into QBO.) I want my chart to mirror that structure.

However, in following directions to set up a new account, I cannot add a new account. I got  to Chart of Accounts > New. However, this does not cause a "New Account" window to pop up, but a "New Category" window. None of the various help discussions on the support forum have helped solve this.

I would love some advice. Thank you!

Can't add account to chart of accounts

Hello there, ct253.

I appreciate you for taking the initial steps in trying to add an account to your company. The result will give us a clearer view of why you’re unable to see the Account window. Let me help and guide you on how to successfully create a new account.

We’ve enhanced the chart of accounts experience in QuickBooks Online (QBO). This is to help small business owners retain a good structure with their accounts. Aside from that, it reduces the manual work of classifying bank transactions by improving the categorization accuracy rate.

Since you’re seeing the New category window, switch to the Accountant view to display the Account window. Follow the steps do this one in your company.

Here’s how:

  1. In QBO, head to the Gear icon in the upper right and go to the Profile section.
  2. Hover your mouse to the bottom part of the screen and click the Switch to Accountant view link.act view.png

Now that we’ve configured your company, you can start setting up accounts in QBO. Here’s an article that outlines the complete instructions: Add an account to your chart of accounts. It includes information about the new changes as well as a video for visual reference.

You can also use the articles below to keep your chart of accounts organized. From there, you’ll see the process of how to assign account numbers to a category.

Stay in touch if you still need help with creating accounts. I’ll be glad to assist further. Have a great rest of your day.
