How can I set up my monthly sales tax accrual based on invoice date and not based on payment received date?

If I invoice a ticket on the last day of the month but don't get paid until the next day, Quickbooks adds the due sales tax to the following month's report. I need it to report my total sales tax due based on the dates my invoices close, not receive payment.

How can I set up my monthly sales tax accrual based on invoice date and not based on payment received date?

Welcome to the Community space, nabmobilediag. Let me share some steps to report sales tax based on invoice date.

You can customize an individual report to use a different accounting method. It counts all the income and expenses, including those not yet paid or received. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Reports menu to search for a report.
  2. Under the Accounting method, choose Accrual or click the Customize button to open the Customize Report window and change the setting in the General section.
  3. Press Run report.

Conversely, changing the accounting method for your company is also possible. This approach records income and expenses when you send the invoice, irrespective of whether the payment has been made or not. Before proceeding, please reach out to the IRS for their approval since they require the same accounting method from year to year. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Account and settings.
  2. On to the Advanced tab, navigate to the Accounting section, and click the Edit ✎ icon.
  3. Change the Accounting method to Accrual.
  4. Select Save, then Done
