Is there a work-around for merging inventory items in QBO when I receive the error, Something's not quite right! QuickBooks doesn't allow the merging of inventory items.

We have recently migrated to a new inventory management system and are also syncing with our e-commerce sales platform. We now have two entries for every product. I've attempted to merge the two products by editing the Product Name, since QBO offers that option when I edit the product. However, when I try to save the updated product with the name that matches the duplicated part, I receive the error that "Something's not quite right! Quickbooks doesn't allow the merging of inventory items." Is there a setting or specific field within the product details that I need to change so that QBO will accept the merge?

Hello, Kelly.

I'll shed some light on the error message, and I'll also help you take care of the duplicated inventory items in QuickBooks.

We're unable to merge inventory items as this will throw off the asset and other inventory-related accounts in QuickBooks. So, we can only merge non-inventory items and services at this time.

What we'll want to do is to simply inactivate those duplicate inventory items. Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the Products and Services page.
  2. On the list of items, find and check the duplicated items.
  3. Click the Batch actions button.
  4. Select Make inactive.
  5. Proceed with Yes on the confirmation screen.

Do this until all of the duplicate items have been inactivate from the list.

Aside from services and non-inventory items, you can also merge lists such as accounts, customers, and vendors. Check this article out if you need more details: Merge duplicate accounts, customers, and vendors in QuickBooks Online.
