Reclassify option missing from settings menu

Hi all!

I recently upgraded to QB Online Plus in order to get the "classes" option and reclassify my transactions based on branch. Even though I enabled "track classes" (from Account and Settings -> Advanced) I still don't see the "Reclassify" option in the settings menu.

Any ideas? Maybe someone can send me the actual URL to see if I can get there directly?

Thanks!

Hello @Hosthub,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. I'm here to provide some clarification about reclassifying transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Class tracking and Reclassifying transactions are different features in the Online version. You'll need QuickBooks Online Accountant or QuickBooks Online Advanced to use the reclassify transactions tool for batch editing transactions.

An accountant with a supported version can also perform the process on your behalf. Users with this access have additional privileges that let them undo bulk reconciliation, reclassify transactions, and write off invoices. In case you need to invite your accountant, here's a link that can help: Add accountant users in QuickBooks Online.

There are specific steps an accountant needs to perform under the Accountant tools to reclassify transactions. For additional reference, I've attached an article about the detailed steps: Accountant tools: Reclassify your client’s transactions.

Please don't hesitate to drop a comment below if you have more questions about reclassifying transactions or class tracking. I'm always around here in the Community space. Take care.

If my accountant has the option to reclassify transactions, shouln't I also have this option? Why remove it from the business owner? Is there a way to enable it for my account?

I can see how you wanted to have the option to reclassify transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Hosthub.

As my colleague, AlcaeusF mentioned above, this feature is only available in the QuickBooks Online Accountant and Advanced versions. Since you have the QBO Plus version, this is why the option is unavailable.

To get this, you can upgrade to the Advanced version of your subscription and use the Reclassify transaction feature to make changes to multiple transactions at once.

In either case, you can use our sample company demo to try out QuickBooks Online. It's an excellent way to get started and experiment with features and options before upgrading to the Advanced version: Test drive QuickBooks Online.

If you have any additional questions concerning reclassifying transactions or class tracking, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. I frequently hang around in this area of the Community. Stay safe!

Is it possible to export all transactions to excel, add the class in excel, and re-import into QB online?

Thank you for your quick response, @Hosthub.

Yes! You can definitely do that and re-import this to your company file. That way, you’ll be able to reclassify this according to their correct category. Before doing so, please ensure to map them correctly to place the transactions accurately.

On the other hand, if you have an accountant that uses QuickBooks Online Accountant, you can invite them and let them reclassify this for you. With that, you’ll save up more time doing the following.

You can follow these steps to start exporting your data from QuickBooks:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Export Data.
  3. From the Reports tab, set the date range.
  4. Add or remove items from the Reports and Lists tabs by toggling the slider.
  5. Then select Export to Excel.

Once done, you’re now ready to import the data to another company file. Also, please consider the following when importing them:

  • Make sure the information you want to import appears on the first page of your workbooks.
  • Make sure your spreadsheet has a header row. QuickBooks Online uses the first line for mapping purposes and does not import it.
  • Make sure that rows do not exceed 1000. If so, split the spreadsheet into smaller files and import them separately.

You can always tag me in your response if you have any additional queries about exporting and importing files in QBO. I'd be delighted to collaborate with you again. Have a great day!
