How can I reclassify my transactions to REMOVE the entry for class? In other words, change the an existing class to BLANK (or no entry)? (I'm running Quickbooks Online Advanced)
Thanks.
Hi there, andy@wct.org.
Removing the assigned class to a transaction is pretty easy. You'll want to open the transaction and remove the class from there.
Here's how:
Please know that you can use the Reclassify tool to change multiple transactions or move them to a different account. You can browse this page to learn more about the process: Learn how to use the reclassify transactions tool to batch edit transactions.
If you want to keep track of each segment in your business, you run reports by class and customize them. I'm adding these articles as your guide.

MaryLandT,
Thanks for the prompt reply ... sadly, I have 1,000s of transactions, all assigned to the same class ("OPERATING") which we'd like to remove.
If I could DELETE the class entry OPERATING, I'd do that, but I can only inactivate, not delete.
If I could CHANGE he class entry from OPERATING to blank, I'd do that, but when I try to edit the entry and change it to blank, system responds "Please enter a value for this required field".
System also does not let me do a RECLASSIFY TRANSACTIONS to a blank class.
Any other ideas?
Andy
Welcome back, andy@wct.org.
Let me continue to address your concern about reclassifying transactions with a blank entry.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), the system really requires you to enter an information when reclassifying a transaction. Also, you have to take note of the following:
Learn more about the reclassify feature of QBO through this article: Reclassify or move multiple transactions at once.
I can see how having the ability to customize the reclassifying of transactions in QBO would be helpful for you and your business. That said, them. encourage you to send us your thoughts and ideas for this specific request so our product engineers can review them. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QBO.
Here's how:

I also suggest visiting our Blog site. This is where we share recent happenings and future developments, such as updates to newly added features. Please refer to the link shared by my colleague above.

Thanks guys...
So to recap, the only way to remove the class is to edit each JE or transaction individually, there is no programmatic way to make this happen.
Conservatively, we have about 27,000 journal entries (from a data import before go-live, but we can't re-run that), and then about 2,000 invoice transactions.
I can make a request of development, how long, realistically, would that take? Weeks? Months? Years?
Feeling a little desperate here (30,000 records!),
Andy
Allow me to join you here and answer your questions about changing classes, Andy.
Yes, you'll need to open each journal entry to remove or delete the assigned class.
Our engineers will also review the submitted feature requests. However, there's no estimated timeframe or guarantee that it will be added to the program. It will depend on the number of requests they receive or if the request is doable or not. The more request they receive for a specific feature, the more likely it will be added in the future.

Another option, sign up for a new QBO account and purchase a third party service to convert your historical data by removing unused classes. You can still work on your QBO account for the time being and at the cut-off date, the service provider will migrate your remaining data from your existing QBO account to the new QBO account as the second stage conversion.
