Remove old sales tax account from balance sheet

I used to pay sales tax in South Carolina, but since I moved, I no longer have to.  However, the account for "SC sales tax payable" still shows up on my balance sheet even though the balance is zero and there has been no activity in that account for over 3 years.

How do I stop that account from showing up on my balance sheet?  I have tried deleting it and changing the "account type" and "detail type" but it says I can't do that because that account is used to track sales tax.

Thanks!

You'll want to inactivate the account, pws3.

Inactivating an account will remove it from the list of accounts and won't show up on reports. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Look for the account and click the drop-down arrow under the ACTION column.
  3. Select Make inactive

You can press F5 from your keyboard to refresh and pull up your Balance Sheet Report again.

For more details in adding and removing columns and filters in your reports, you can use this link: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you have other questions. Take care and have a great day!

Remove old sales tax account from balance sheet

Thanks, but I have already tried that.  I get an error message saying that I cannot change or delete that account (see screenshot).

Any other ideas?

Tax accounts cannot be deleted, pws3.

QuickBooks uses certain accounts as default accounts for features. Tax and undeposited funds accounts are examples of default account. You can't delete default accounts.

You can learn more about account deletion in this article: Delete an account on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

On the other hand, for this account not to show when you run the Balance Sheet report, make sure to tick the box Except zero amount. This can be found under the Customize tab.
