Report by tag not showing the memo/Description field

I am trying to run a report by tag but the memo/Description is not appearing even though I have ticked it in the settings. I have also cleared my cache but still no luck

As an insight, you'll need to group your tags first so you can run tag-specific reports. Otherwise, you can you can only search for individual transactions with ungrouped tags.

 

Here is the step-by-step guide: 

 

  1. Go to the Settings menu, then select Tags.
  2. Click the New dropdown, then select Tag group.
  3. Give the group a name and select a color from the dropdown, then select Save.

 

Then, create new tags and tag transactions to create the tag and tags form. Here's how:

 

  1. Enter the name of the tag you want to create in the Tags field.
  2. Select + Add.
  3. Choose one of your groups to add the tag to it.

 

Once done, you can now run reports for the tag group. Here's how: 

 

  1. Go to the Banking menu and select Tags.
  2. Find a group on the list.
  3. Select Run report under the Action column.

Hi

Thanks but none of that is the problem. The issue is that the memo/description field is blank and I cannot get it to populate. I really  need the description to show on the report - I have ticked the memo box in settings and refreshed / re run the report but the description still does no show

Can you also tell us if the data that you want to show is written in the Memo or in the Description field? Please take note that the Transaction List by Tag or Group reports will only show details that are placed inside the Memo field. 

 

If they are written in the Description, you will need to copy and paste them in the Memo field so they will show in the report.

Ahh - ok. Thanks for that. I havel copied the descriptions into the memo field and it worked. Thanks for the help

Having both the Memo and Description field filled out usually works for me and the memo text shows up on a report. However, there are some instances where it does not work although everything is filled out correctly. Maybe a bug? Would appreciate additional exploration by the QB team.

I'd love to assist you further with this issue about your reports in QuickBooks Online (QBO). 

 

There are a few things I need to know about this situation:

  • Does the issue happen on a specific report? 
  • Does it happen on a specific type of transaction?

At this time, what I can suggest is for you to open your browser's private window. This isolates cache, which is the common cause of unusual behaviors in browsers.

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If that works, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. Otherwise, open an alternate browser that's available for you. 

 

You also have the option to contact our Technical Support team for assistance. They can investigate the issue you stated above, and then provide a resolution for you.

If they are written in the Description, you will need to copy and paste them in the Memo field so they will show in the report. 

 

Is there a way without copy and paste to get a description to show up in both fields?

At the moment, the only way to get the description details to show up in the Memo field is through copying and pasting them.


I recognize how convenient it is for users to have this functionality. You can use the Feedback option within your QuickBooks Online company file to send this idea. This way, our management and engineering teams could take action to help improve your experience and make the program better.


Here’s how:

 

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
  2. Type your suggestions, then select Next.
  3. You'll be provided a list of suggested Help articles related to your comment. You can select Skip to proceed.
  4. From the drop-down, choose the appropriate category, then press Send message.

This is a very old issue and I am glad to see this here.
