What is the correct way to enter a Royalty payment taken from your business account to your personal account?

That is rather odd, the business paying you a royalty.  But if so, the payment out of the business would post to a royalty expense account

Maybe, royalty is the wrong wording. This is our business and we weren't paying ourselves weekly paychecks. We  would do a draw when needed.

Hello there, @Jrobe.

I'll be glad to help you record the royalty payment taken from your business account to your personal account.

First, let's create an Equity account to track this transaction.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top, and then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. In the Chart of Accounts window, click New.
  3. Under the Account Type drop-down, select Equity.
  4. From the Detail Type drop-down, choose Owner’s Equity.
Take note that S Corporations use Owner’s equity to show the cumulative net income or loss of their business as of the beginning of the fiscal year.
  5. Add an opening balance, and choose Save and Close.

After that, you can now write a check from an owner's equity account. I'll guide you how:

  1. Go to + New, then choose Check.
  2. Select the bank account where your money will be withdrawn.
  3. If you want to print the check, tick the box beside Print.
  4. To fill in the checks field, select the Owner's equity you created under the Account field. The memo field is optional. This check should appear in the register, printed checks, and on reports where it is included.
  5. Lastly, choose Save and Close or Save and New to writing another check.

For more information, you can check on how to Set up and pay an owner's draw.

I would also like to add this article to learn how to record an owner's contribution in QuickBooks: Record an owner's contribution or capital investment in your business."

I'm always here to help if you need additional information about recording payments.
