Shipping Income

Why is Shipping Income appearing as "not specified" in my Sales by Product Summary report? Can I change this? This account is correctly labeled in the chart of accounts.

Thank you for your prompt reply, @Pattymulf.

I’ll chime in on this thread to add further information about the not specified section in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The Sales by Product/Service Summary report often displays shipping costs as Not Specified. The system is functioning as intended, simply reflecting information on products and services.

If there's a specific field for that transaction, QuickBooks won't be able to identify those fields as items. It's programmed to only identify data based on the target sources.

In addition, you can have your report printed by referring to this article. Just hover your mouse to the Print reports dropdown to see instructions: Print reports

Let's figure out why your Shipping Income shows as Not specified, Pattymulf.

First, I'd like to ask what part of the Sales by Product Summary report the Not specified show? This will helps me share appropriate information about your concern.

If you're creating invoices with the discounts, that might be the possible reason why it reflects as not specified. QuickBooks will be able to recognize data based on what you've entered. You can review the transactions by clicking the amounts.

Tirzah thank you for your offer to help.  Here are details about what happens when I run the Sales by Product Summary report: in the left column are listed all my inventory products that were sold during the specified time period.  At the very bottom of the left column, as if it was another product, "Not Specified" is listed along with a dollar amount.  I figured out the "Not Specified" item was actually shipping charges by clicking on that dollar amount - it took me to a table of all invoices that listed all Shipping charges associated with each invoice.  This seems strange to me, for two reasons:  First, why would shipping income be included in a sales by product report?  Second, why the incorrect label "Not Specified"? I have appropriately set up my shipping income account (Account & settings> Sales>Sales Form Content>turned on the Shipping button).  This account is labeled Shipping Income in my chart of accounts, and my Profit and Loss report shows Shipping Income correctly.  Finally, to answer another question: No I do not create invoices with discounts.

Hello there, @Pattymulf.

Allow me to join this thread and share some insights about the reporting function in QuickBooks.

A transaction falls under the Not Specified group when it's not set up into a particular filter. Which is also why the Shipping Income are not showing on the Sales by Product Summary report.

Not Specified shows in the report if there are line items that don't have PRODUCT/SERVICE. These items usually come from discounts and billable expenses (Markups, and Categories).

I've attached an article you can visit to learn more about how to configure reports and show the data your business needs, like adding columns and filters: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

I'm sorry but I still don't understand.  I am using the QBO default "Shipping Income" account, and I didn't make any changes to the default settings.  The default settings to "Shipping Income" are: saved under "Income" account, tax form section "Service/Fee Income".  Since it isn't a product, why is it appearing in a Sales by Product report, as if it were a product?  And it's given the name "Not Specified", which makes it very confusing to anyone looking at this report.
