Sorting Aging Summary by first name

We recently  updated our QB to QB for Macs Desktop 2022. Things seem to be going well. However, when I run an A/R Aging Summary report, I like to sort by first names. I used to hover over the first name in the column and a little arrow would appear which would let automatically sort by first names. Now the list appears and it's not even sorted by last name...I'm not sure how QB is sorting this list. Any magic keys I'm not seeing?

Let's get this working for you, officemanager07

This crashing behavior is often caused by damaged data. If you haven't tried verifying and rebuilding your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, I suggest doing so. This helps identify the most commonly known data issues within the file and resolves it.

Before we begin with the troubleshooting, let's secure a backup of your company file. Once done, we can proceed to verify and rebuild your data in QuickBooks Desktop. Feel free to follow MayJoyD's steps.

You can also check out this article for the detailed steps on running the Verify and Rebuild tool in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac: Resolve data damage on your company file.

Get back to me if there's anything I can help you with. I'd be happy to assist you further. Enjoy the rest of the day.

My issue is that I cannot sort the NAME column of the A/R Aging Summary Report. I could before in QB for Macs 2019. I can sort the data columns, but not the names. I'm mystified on how this indicates a crash of our data. The report totals are fine and all other tasks are functioning well. To me it looks like a convenient function that was tossed out during the 'updating'. I sometimes wonder if the people that design the upgrades actually use the product. I appreciate the quick reply, but this seems like an answer to a problem I don't have.

Hello, officemanager07.

I appreciate your time in getting back to us. I'd like to share some clarifications regarding the name sorting options in QuickBooks Mac.

To clarify, we changed the sorting functionalities in QuickBooks Mac 2022. Instead of clicking on the column header, there is a new drop-down menu right above the header where the sorting options are located.

On the A/R Aging Summary report, let's click on the arrow to open the sorting options. We can take a look at this screenshot to better help us visually:

I so appreciate the quick responses to my question. However, I feel this is a true case of form not following function; where the 'change' was not helpful. The A/R Aging Summary's name column has no drop-down box to allow me to sort the names. That is what I want to do. I don't want to sort the report by the number columns. I used to be able to click on the names column and it would automatically sort it by first names descending. That's it. And I can't do that any longer. And I don't really want to spend my time trying to 'customize' a report that already exists. It's just frustrating when things are re-engineered by people who I don't believe actually use the product.

Hello, officemanager07.

Thank you for getting back to us. I have other troubleshooting steps to help you have the option to sort the names on your A/R report.

Let's ensure first your QuickBooks is up to date. Then, you can run re-sort lists or Verify Rebuild tool in QuickBooks for Mac: Here's how:

Here's how you can re-sort your customer list:

  1. Go to the Customer. Then Customer Center
  2. Click Edit at the top left of QuickBooks.
  3. Pick Re-sort List.
  4. Press OK.

To run the Verify tool:

  1. Press on File.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Pick Verify Data and Rebuild Data later on if issue detected.

Once accomplished, the report you generate will sort it by first names descending. For more information on customizing reports, check out this article: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

You're still welcome to reply here if you have any other concerns with reports or other processes in QuickBooks. I'm here to help. Take care!

Okay, I will say that while I do appreciate your quick responses, none of your replies have solved the issue. I just updated to this new QB for Macs 2022 last week. I doubt my data is corrupted, and I see no reason to take the time to rebuild a database in order to sort a list of names. It is obvious that the function of hovering over the column of names with a small arrow to sort the list was removed during this latest update and it has not been restored in the new version. This particular function that I was using had been a part of QB since I started using it in 2015. So I'll say that my issue has not been resolved and we'll just have to adjust to the inconvenience.

This isn't the experience we want you to have, officemanager07.

I appreciate the time you've spent following the steps provided above to sort your Aging Summary Report by the first name. Running verify and rebuild data should have fixed company file issues. Since none of the troubleshooting procedures works, I encourage you to contact our QuickBooks Desktop Support. They have the tools to pull up your account and submit a ticket for investigation.

Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Enter a brief description of your issue, then select Let's talk, and then choose a way to connect.

You can also use this link to reach them: Contact us.

In the meantime, you can consider exporting your report. From there, you can customize and sort it by their first names. Refer to this article for a complete guide: Export a report in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Don't hesitate to add any details below if you need further assistance running reports. We're always here to help you.

I don't think anyone really understands the issue. I have not run the verify data and rebuild. I see no reason do all of these steps, when the very easy click and sort name column was eliminated. I guess I'm just pointing out that the developers of the newest upgrade eliminated a convenient sorting step and somehow created a rebuild-your-data procedure, that seems totally user-unfriendly, or if it even does what I'm wanting.  Maybe you should put this out in your Q & A area and see if other users of QB for Mac Desktop 2022 have the same question.
